    Desoldering Iron upgrade

    Hello everyone
I would like to upgrade to a desoldering station. At the moment I am using
Radio shack bulb sucker which is fine except that tips ware out fast.

For an occasional monitor repair I am interested in this model
http://www.circuitspecialists.com/csi474a.html has anyone bought this and
do you like it. the price is much better then any other product and shipping is much cheaper then ordering from China
    Thank you

    Re: De-soldering Iron upgrade

I could be wrong about this.....but
The gun look like the desoldering station I have and its made in China
But they have discontinued the model that I have and they have a new model
some of the part look the same the tips the spring the suction can and filter

I have some issue with setup

One is the heater elements they do not last very long in running hours

Two is the tips do not last long in respect of how many part that you can remove.........>
.....>one note the manual says you should not touch the board with the tip.....> doing this dose not work very well

Three the filter do not last long ether

Four the filter spring need to be clean with a soldering iron do not be temped
to clean this spring by pulling the spring to clean out the old solder from it

But other than these item it a good tool to have for the money but you will have to spend on spare parts to keep it working

Here is what I did.....> if you do not want spend lot of money I use this set up at work it works very well

Buy one.....> 60W Soldering Iron Model: TR-60 | Catalog #: 64-216 Radio Shack ( Do not use this iron with out a dimmer switch it get very HOT with the dimmer switch it has very usable range even if the dimmer switch is turn all the way ON )

Buy one.....> 45-Watt De-soldering Iron Model: 64-2060 | Catalog #: 64-2060 Radio Shack (this iron dose not get hot enough with the dimmer switch and with out the dimmer switch you can not control the amount of heat you are put on a board )

      Buy one light dimer switch

Take the De-soldering part off the heater part there are two set screw loosen the [it is larger and longer than the other one DO NOT loosen the other set screw ] the same set screw setup is on the 60 watt iron

Take the tip out of the 60 watt iron and put De-soldering in it place an take the dimmer switch to control the iron and like I said before it works very well for the money about $40.00 you will spend on this set up

De-soldering Bulb Model: 64-2086 | Catalog #: 64-2086 Radio Shack is the bulb that is use on the De-soldering part of the iron

      I hope this helps

          Re: Desoldering Iron upgrade

I have made several purchases from circuit specialist website. here is what I purchase:

          Soldering station BK2000+

BK4050 Hot Air Station with Vacuum component handler & Mechanical Arm

The soldering station work great for about 6 months or more, then I will have to replace a component inside I believe its a triac the that drive the soldering heating element. I get a fluctuation in the soldering iron temp when the triac start to fail. But this is minor issue because I use this station a lot. Overall its work great.

BK4050 Hot Air Station with Vacuum component handler & Mechanical Arm
work great its heat up very fast and the temp hold very steady. the Mechanical Arm come in very handy. no problem so far had it about 6 months plus now.

give an update on your purchase

          Hope this help

            BLACKJACK SOLDERWERKS DESOLDER
ING STATION FOR THRU-HOLE COMPONENTS review

I just received my Blackjack desoldering station
Tool was packed well and looks great desolders caps with ease a lot faster then radio shack pumps. The only problem I have is desoldering small caps on main board it will not suck up the solder 400deg F even after adding solder to cap. If main boards are double layer pcbs solder station does not desolders small caps, unless I need a finer tip any suggestions welcome

              Re: Desoldering Iron upgrade

Playing around some more I raised the temp to between 600 & 800 deg F sometimes it helped but some joints where not easy to desolder. It's is not as immediate as desoldering power supply board.

                Re: Desoldering Iron upgrade

Ok I am now trying to desolders caps off a junk motherboard, it seems that it is easier to desolder motherboard caps then a main board cap , but the positive side of cap is harder to desolders then the negative side on motherboards
The iron does not burn the pcb as it states on the directions. I am getting used to this tool
Overall impression for 150.00 with shipping its better then radio shack desolders pump

But not good enough for a busy repair shop

motherboard is a multi layer PCB = lots of copper benith.
It worths to try to preheat it with a simple hair dryer for 1-3 minutes before attaching the soldering iron to it.

                        You are welcome mate :-)

But I will say that there is no need to aim the caps.
You can just preheat the bare PCB at the location that those caps are under it.
The same tecnique works even for VGA cards & laptop repairs.

2 months past since my purchase of the BK 4000 desoldering station, I repaired may be 10
monitors. I already wore out 1 tip. My question is how long does a desoldering tip last
is there a better quality tip available for this BK 4000.

Other then getting a better quility tip the BK 4000 desolding staion works great

You have get married with a low cost system, which looks to come with three spare tips in total.

My advice is to use them all, and if this system are still standing regarding the health of the heat element and pump, only then move forward & buy some extra tips.

Looking for quality made tips for this system is a wild dream.
There is no such compatibility with solutions offered by other vendors.

There is no easy answers when you set a budget.
If you are close to start working as professional = start your own legit business and expecting an significant work flow.
Some of your best bets is Weller or JBC or DEN-ON (Japan).
