    You need thicker/less resistive/paralleled wire so you can drive more current using lower voltage (hint: those bldc motors have thick windings for a reason!), or possibly a core with higher permeability; though I suspect eddy currents would be an issue when spinning very fast - so electrical steel or better?

        So I bought some 16 gauge transformer wire and made another coil, but it didn't work much better than the first one, so I ended up buying these coils on wish.com ...



        I wired them up like this:



        Here is the first spin I got ...

        it's a little rough so obviously, I'm going to have to play with voltage levels and timing, but it looks like I'm on the right track.
