Lenovo G510 AMD Graphics Card not Detected

    • Machine Model Number: Lenovo G510 (20238)

    • Specifications:
      • Motherboard Model Number: Factory (LA-9641P HannStar), Actual (LA-9641P Palwonn)
      • Motherboard BIOS Version: 79CN48WW(V3.07)
      • CPU: Factory (Intel i7-4702MQ), Actual (Intel i5-4310M)
      • GPU: AMD Radeon R7 M265
      • RAM: 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz (8GB)
      • Storage Device: Kingston A400 SSD + TOSHIBA MQ01ABD (in a 12.7mm Tray)

    • History, Symptoms and State of the Machine:
      • History: Some of the factory motherboard's components were fried, possibly due to overheating, but I'm not sure. The only difference between the factory and the actual motherboard is the vendor, which I purchased used from AliExpress. After replacing the motherboard, I couldn't get the laptop to boot; the screen was back, and the fan ran for approximately four seconds before shutting off, so I took it to a specialist, who fixed it by replacing the defective factory CPU with the actual one.

The laptop functioned flawlessly until I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 and discovered that the AMD Graphics Card had vanished from the Device Manager shortly after installing the drivers. I double-checked the BIOS settings and found that my Graphics Settings were set to Switchable Graphics not UMA. I upgraded the BIOS to v3.09 and then reverted it to v3.07 after seeing no changes.
      • Symptoms: After installing a fresh copy of Windows 7, the AMD Graphics Card vanished.
      • State of the Machine: The laptop is in fine working order, but getting the AMD Graphics Card to operate is critical because several of the softwares I use for my studies are dependent on it.

What are my options for resolving this problem?
    Thank you!

Hi. Is it possible that the received board from AliExpress does not feature the AMD GPU on your logic board?

Check around the logic board for the GPU. Most likely it will be covered with a heatsink but post pictures of any silk screen text on the board near this part. Do not remove the heat sink.

The device driver follows the enumeration of the hardware. If the hardware is missing or disabled then there will be no need for the device driver nor will it be listed in the device manager tree.

Hello there, mon2! Thank you so much for taking the time to read through my problem and offer a solution.

Yes, I can certify that my logic board is equipped with an AMD Radeon R7 M265 Graphics Card (please see the images I attached)

The issue is that the Graphics Card was previously visible and functioning OK, but it vanished after I messed around with the BIOS settings to get the laptop to read my UEFI USB drive containing the Windows 7 installation files.

When I loaded a fresh copy of Windows 7 and discovered that the Graphics Card had vanished, I panicked and upgraded the BIOS to v3.09 from Lenovo's official support page, only to have it reverted to v3.07 after seeing no difference.

Updating Bios is not enough. You are supposed to reporogram the Bios chip entirely using an external programmer. But first, take a backup of the Bios chip.

Thank you caspian for your response! I have an CH341A BIOS Programmer that comes with a SOIC8 Clip and Adapters.

Where I can find a BIOS dump and how would I know that's going to work with my motherboard?
