Can someone identify this LED type?

    Hi guys
I need some replacement Red LEDs for an advertising sign.

I thought the original ones were 5mm but they are not, I could only fit a 5mm if I pushed a round file through the hole and widened it slightly. The originals mus be about 4.5mm. Also the original type are shorter, and the 5mm type does not look right when fitted - I tried one.

I thought these were called 'Bowler Hat' LEDs. but when I searched for that on aliexpress, it is clearly not what they are!

See pics, it's the shorter type I need.
    Cheers

Search for straw hat LED not bowler hat.

The search engine used by Ali is garbage, but then they can't even save currency and language settings so it's not surprising

There seem to be plenty of 4.8mm sized red LEDs on Ali https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale...+straw+hat+red

The height of the LED die in the epoxy lens determines its viewing angle. For wide angle, the straw hat's have not much for a lens, almost flat tops, compared to usual T1-3/4 (5mm) parts. You have to look at the side of the LED to figure out if it's narrow or wide angle.

Also, the brightness intensity in candelas is much lower number for wide angle LED's because the light is over a wider area. Shopping the brightest LED's, a 20° LED is much higher cd number than the same die in a wide angle lens package.

LED signs I always recap the power supply, so many bad electrolytics which can be part of the problem.

The only problem I have now is all the 'Worzel Gummidge' LEDs (google it if you don't get the joke!) on the sign are made of red plastic, where as all the cheap ones I can find on ali or ebay are clear plastic and probably would not look right unless I replaced all of them - so I can't see any cheap enough option to make it worthwhile fixing.

search "diffused straw hat" should find ones with tinted/diffused package.
                  Lots on Aliexpress too.

you may need to replace them all anyway - chances of them having the same brightness is slim.

Could cheat and change resistors ... granted if it were wired by letter it'd make it less likely to notice intensity differences.
