Hey all, I'm Ryan. I'm 25 and an avid video gamer and electronics geek. I've recently gotten into repairing electronics for fun, and I also just started a job as a PC Tech. I'm fairly knowledgeable with PCs, networking, software, and hardware. I'm trying to branch out into repairing TVs, video game consoles, if it's electronic, I wanna fix it. I'll be posting lots of questions and hoping to gain as much information as I can to help me with these side projects and with my new career.

          Nice to meet you all!

Hey all. I am fat. ugly. dull. boring. repetitive.

But I love fixing stuff and hate throwing stuff away that can be repaired.

I think I am going to like it here

And if you wouldn't mind to keep this thread \"clean\" let's try to keep the the chitchat (i.e. even the welcome to the board replies) to a minimum or this thread may get to 100 pages fast

So I'll start things off :

My name is petabyte and I'm a forum junkie. I've been off the wagon for a number of years and countless times I've tried to stop but it's useless.. I need to feed my learning addiction.. :!:

Now just a bit about me.. I'm a fairly secretive guy in terms of privacy on the net.. especially when the things you write are visable to anyone with a net connection. But I love to share the info and knowledge I have, so that's why I'm here, to share and learn.

my formal education is that of an electronic engineer and I held a field service position with a firm for over 20 years.. that job is gone now along with company car and laptop <cry> oh well..
So needless to say (but i will) I've always tinkered with things.. yes, a hacker.. (too bad that term lost it's orignal meaning) a hardware hacker mostly.. hacking fixes in whatever I find that breaks.. (except for cars, I have friends for that) I got started a little late into the computers, my first box was an ibm pc-xt with a whopping 10meg HD,blazing fast 4.66mhz 8086 processor, 640k mem running dos 3.3.. man was I cool back then.. nevermind..

so these days, I'm forced to be a software guy as well.. as I fix pc's for friends and that usually means cleaning virus/trojan/adware and reinstalling OS's.. yeah hardware breaks but not that often  so as a result, I keep up on my software knowledge by visting a few security forums.. and trolling around a few hardware forums as well.

now I found this place from a thread at motherboards.org/forums
where I've been hanging out lately.. it's a nice friendly place with some pretty smart people.. mostly, of course, it's about mobo's.. So this person mentioned badcaps.net and I recalled reading articles a year or so ago about the faulty caps and was curious as to what you guys were up to.. and I said \"w00t.. they have a forum\"..

and so now.. you're stuck with me :P

so what's your story ? come on.. give it up..
I am trying to fix my son's TV. Just doing electronics since high school in 19xx- well, 8 tracks were the in thing in cars.. Been up at 1000 feet on radio broadcast towers, crawling inside of transmitters, fixing TV's that had tubes (and then transistors, then ics, then large scale ic's, then microprocessors), had a Tandy 1000 with a 10 Meg hard drive (that was class having all your programs available and not having to load up from 8" floppies), DOS 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and all the various versions... Real men know how to do it with a dos prompt! Okay, get off my lawn.... Chuck

Hey just want to introduce myself - been doing electronics since I was a kid in the mid-70's -- back when there were still tubes in some tv's and when everything was discrete...

Hi i'm Oxlahun. My first aproach to electricity in 1978 when i was 2 years old and put a wire doing short-circuit in a 110V outlet... Played too much with capacitors, at 9 year i got a very big 36.000 mf capacitor and use it to scare my sister and my friends with the large spark produced by linking the terminals with a metal bar.

Now I'm a systems programmer but I have my home electronics workshop where I experiment.

Hi all, I'm Ian and have been involved with electronics since I was a teen though in those days it was valves and high voltages and big transformers. Over the years I have fixed the usual TVs and stereos etc for a crust either working for myself or repair companies. The latter part of the career after doing and engineering degree was with a military company doing some secret squirrel stuff having interesting times in foreign lands and I mean foreign.
I like probably all of us here enjoy fixing things, usually around the house, and broken stuff belonging to friends etc. As for caps I have seen a few in my time and been 'shocked' by their behaviour (this is the proper English spelling) too I might add...

                                  Hello,
                                  My name is Paul.
I have been building and repairing computers for 18 years now and ran my own business for the same amount of time.
I have always been a bit of an electronics geek at heart but never really took the time out to learn at component level what and how things really worked and that is why I am here....To learn.
I have recently started to fiddle with broken tv's, psu's and radios and have had a good success rate so far. I am also thinking about becoming a licensed Ham.
I am 48 years young, married to the mother of my two beautiful girls who are in their early twenties, and recently retired to Ireland from the UK.
I found this great forum after my Samsung TV died on me a couple of days ago now, and am now awaiting the parts to hopefully repair the psu...I have to go now as there is much yellow/brown glue to remove before works commence.

                                  Thanks again )
