Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

I found your site through a google search. I'm an electronics technician and I'm currently trying to work with maintenance on PC video cards. I graduated in electronics in 1997 but worked with computers until I retired due to disability due to tendinitis. Today I work with electronics whenever I can...

Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hi everyone, Carl here, from Bristol, UK. Happened on this forum via what I assume is a fairly common route: Frustrated by Macbook Pro failures, fancy myself handy with a soldering iron but don't know where to go for info, found Louis Rossmann on YouTube and wound up here.

I've been fiddling with computers since about 1980 or a bit before, my first computer was a Commodore PET and I was inside that with a soldering iron in fairly short order. Since then I've mostly focused on software, I've worked as VAX/VMS and assorted Unix sysadmin, and embedded software and some specialist hardware design, current day job involves embedded realtime operating systems. I'm not a computer repair guy, and only partialy equipped for board level repair on modern machines but am fed up with macbooks dying because of a cheap component failure and Apple saying it's a write-off, buy a new one. Came here looking for schematics to keep some "ancient" (in Apple terms) perfectly good machines running. Deliberate obsolescence and excessive e-waste are not exactly part of the solution when it comes to adverse ecological impact from this stuff, and in any case, I just find it satisfying to fix things.

          Thanks for reading my intro!

          Cheers,

          - Carl

                  Hallo Zusammen,

Hello all! I am a thinkpad enthusiast, here to try to use Knucklegrumble's automatic Supervisor Passwords (bios password) from a used Thinkpad I bought.

I have done some component level repairs, though I've subcontracted the microsoldering. For example, I got a Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 5 from a reddit post for VERY little because the thunderbolt EEPROM was dead, so it wouldn't charge, but otherwise worked. I got a replacement chip and paid my talented friend to swap it for me. Then I used a CH431A USB programmer and the Linux program Flashrom to flash the new EEPROM chip and viola, it's been working great since.

I started with battery powered 1 tube radios on medium wave - using 1S4 tubes etc, and have carried on from there. I still repair various equipment that uses vacuum tubes.

Forums, i used to read them a lot when i was younger, they are the very reason i have developed a hobby to repairing things and non real time talk sans email.

Greeting from Venezuela, hope we all can do good things for everybody
