    Ceiling Fan Speed Capacitor

I've got a bulging capacitor in my ceiling fan that only gives me high speed.

    It's a 4-wire guy and I'm having a heck of a time finding a direct replacement. I've attached a pic of mine. As you can see, it's a 4uf - 5uf. The closest I can find is a 5uf - 5uf.

    Would this work?

    Thanks!

Looks like you'll also need some 330K resistors. If you want exact values, order 2 capacitors, 1 5uf and 1 4uf, as well as 2 .5W 330K resistors and wire as shown.
Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.

My computer doubles as a space heater.

You can probably use 5uf + 5uf without the bleeder resistors, or do more search on EBAY for SK MOTOR CAPACITOR.

If I were to buy something like in the picture I'm attaching, could I just leave out the brown and end up with the same thing?

Hopefully, that's not a really stupid question...

          yes,
but you should fit the 330k resistors if you can, they are to stop you getting a shock among other things

Just curious. Are those resistors just an extra safety thing or would it be inadvisable to go without? In all of the searching I've done looking for these caps, I have not seen another with resistors.

              Thanks.

                Re: Ceiling Fan Speed Capacitor

The bleeder resistor is used for discharging the cap so if you have to work on the fan after disconnecting the power, the cap will be discharged by the resistor so you will not get shock from it, most motor caps do not have resistors.

I just wanted to say thanks everyone!

I bought a replacement cap and wire nutted off the unneeded lead. Hooked it up and it works perfectly.

If you all ready the 5 5 uf cap , I would try it . My guess is that the speed might be a little off .

Look at this website page you can find the cap you are looking for

                        https://eceilingfans.com/capacitors_-_ceiling_fans.html

                        One note

I have not bought from them before

If the UF value is too high then the motor might run warm than normal
This might be a problem or it might not be problem it just depends on the motor ( just testing the motor that would be fine use it for that )
