Always turn the power supply switch off

On my shop box the shitty case (but one I have to use because it has two easy to insertable physical sata bays on top) for 2.5 and 3.5

The USB 3.0 case on top is a literal USB extension cable to a 3.0 port on the back (was made many years ago)

So I got a 5.25 front panel with 4x USB 3.0 ports because the motherboard has 2x 3.0 headers (four ports total). Soo I tried to plug them in and it didn't go. It bent some pins. I was straightening them out with a dental pick when suddenly the computer turned on when I shorted two of the pins. Didn't think much of it and switched the power off

I took a sewing needle and made the holes on the plugs bigger, it then fit in after

Aaaand suddenly none of the ports worked after I turned it on. Must have been a power to data short.

Luckily it has an ASMedia chip for the USB-C and one USB-A 3.0 ports. I was able to get into windows and The USB xhci driver in windows said code 10, failed. Can't get into bios without hooking it to the Asmedia 3.0 port.

Soooo now I'm going to have to get a PCI-E card with headers and ports (perhaps two) and possibly a hub for the USB-C in the back. God damn that little $17 panel cost me big. But it is my fault. I rarely ever have a non-power header short that causes a turn on. This is actually the second time I've ever had a non power header short turn it on, but the other one was putting a PCI card in and it didn't damage anything

Funny thing you mention this… had something similar, but on mine the USB was intermittent. So I went and try bending the pins and no go. So I proceeded to change the USB port since the tabs on the sides were broken and the metal casing of the port bent. That was a couple of days ago.

Look at the main board and see if there is a fuse or something? I had a fuse on the board.

        lol
in future configure the motherboard to NOT wake on lan, usb, keyboard or any other "event" other than the power button.
also, if it has a jumper for it, you DONT want usb powered in standby!

i'v had boards jump to life by accident because of those stupid options - you have to be pretty fucking lazy to need to turn your pc on by touching the keyboard!!!

WoL is good, saves me a trip to the basement to power up machines to get them to run backups...

It's a matter of knowing when to turn the switch off or unplugging. Generally if you don't know what you're doing, unplug!

Probably several, I doubt I can find the main USB one because none of the ports work

also with the Code 10, I think it's permanent damage

usb signaling is 3.3v so look for some tiny zener diodes on the data lines

At least you didn't swap a motherboard with the power on.

i saw a guy power up a motherboard while it was sitting on the coated-mylar bag once - he thought it was an insulator till it sparked and killed his board! LOL

Never use an antistatic bag as a insulator, especially for testing.

Wait, do you mean the grey anti-static bags are conductive?

of course - how do you think they disipate static?
it's a thin coating of metal.

Oh shit. I mean, I've soldered that was on a big static bag, and a few times I've booted boards on a bag. Though without any problems. Hmm, perhaps its not totally conductive

I put my meter on a bag and got no conductivity

                              then it's not anti-static
it should read in the megohms

oh fuck me. Now it won't reset or power off. Always have to keep the power button down or turn the PSU off.

well I might just have to get this. Same board, cheaper than getting a new cpu/mb

check if usb signal tracks are shorted to ground or 5v or 3.3v - indicating a blown diode or filter

you dont need to, you just remove them - you lose the protection but if it works it's a win
