Vizio e470vl has 2 seconds to black

trying to fix this tv for a friend on the cheap, so no replacing of motherboard or PSU as they are still over 60$ each even though this tv is pretty old
    already.

i have psu board number 0500-0407-0700
    seen here: http://www.shopjimmy.com/vizio-0500-...upply-unit.htm

    voltages im getting at CN201:
    pin label voltage
    1 5vsb 5.09
    2 5vsb 5.09
    3 5vsb 5.09
    4-7 GND 0
    8-10 12v - 12.04v
    11 PSON 2.2V
    12 INV ON 3.22V
    13 LAMP 0V
14 DIM 3.23 at first then drops to 2.91

3 fuses on the mb read fine 5v and 12v

first thing i tried to do was unplug the psu from the main board and used 1k resistors to jump from 5vsb to PSON. no luck. so i jumped also from 5vsb to INV ON. still no luck. just for kicks i tried jumping to lamp from dim, and a few other random combinations. all i was ever able to get was a quick backlight flash, no flash at all, and one time, i swear i got it to stay on but it was flickering like mad. cant remember the combo that got it to do that, but suffice it to say i just couldnt make this psu stay on by itself.

so i plugged it all back in normally with no jumpers and was just trying to test the voltages at the connector, when the backlights came to life. the tv stayed on for over an hour before shutting down again. i started to think maybe it could be a loose wire at cn201? but of course the next day it was back to the same 2seconds to black crap and no ammount of jiggling wires or prodding with the voltmeter probes could get it going again.

so i tried disconnecting inv_on from the mb connector and leaving the mb plugged in and jumping inv_on with 5vsb like before...still nothing.

i started to feel like the problem had something to do with lamp always being 0, so i tried various combinations of jumping it from, pson, inv_on and 5vsb. none of that would work.

but for some crazy reason, when i jumpered from dim to lamp, voila! the backlight stays on solid, the tv functions and everything looks fine!

so LAMP is usually at 0v when the set is in standby or on (amber or white)
and the dimm of course is 0 in amber and 2.91 in white
but when i use the 1k resistor between the 2 of them, they both get around 2v which seems to be the sweet spot.

thing is i do hear a slight whine coming from the inverters. i cant be sure if this is normal. its definitely not something you would hear unless you put your ear to the back of the tv once the case is on. so maybe i dont need to worry about it?

thing im worried about, is can i leave this in place as a permanent solution without possibly causing a fire hazard down the road?

and more importantly, i'd really like to know for sure if this is a PSU problem or a MB problem!
kind of hard to do when theres no service manual for it... (at least i couldnt find it on elektrotanya, is there some better place to look now?)

thank you for all your help so far!

Common trouble on this set is u33 on main, you can test and verify it has input voltage and see if it is outputting the 2.5v for the backlights to turn on

thank you for the reply I will check that out as soon as I can. But what about the other question I had? is this jumper solution I found between dim and lamp dangerous to use for long term?

Im not sure on that, I try to error on the side of caution and say probably not. Budm would might have better insight into whether it would be a safe bodge or not

Can we see the whole backside of the TV to see what boards you have in your TV?
So far the main board is sending the correct signals.

Re: Vizio e470vl has 2 seconds to black

i listed the psu in the first post:
            0500-0407-0700
            http://www.shopjimmy.com/vizio-0500-...upply-unit.htm

and the motherboard is this one:
            0171-2272-3253
            http://www.shopjimmy.com/vizio-3647-...for-e470vl.htm

i did some more testing last night and i found that when i disconnected the wire from lamp going to the PSU, then i do read 2.5v from the MB. somehow when it is connected though, it all goes to 0. does this mean some kind of short to ground? but why then does it not short to ground the DIM voltage when i jumper those 2? if its the circuit on the psu connected to the lamp pin...

but mainly i just want to know if its safe to use. cause this guy doesnt have a lot of money to pay me to replace chips...though i would like to do it, its not my tv so not my call. if he sees it working like how it is right now he's gonna want to take it home...but then if a fire happens or the tv breaks later ill get the blame!

so just to clarify: i have the lamp pin wire that goes to the mb disconnected from cn201, and have jumpered that pin with DIMM (13,14) using a 1k resistor, and the tv appears to function just fine, but with a slight high pitch whine from the inverters that cant be heard unless your right there with the back off

The problem is that lots of Forum users outside of the USA cannot access Shopjimmy having their IP address blocked by Shopjimmy. So the link is useless to many however attaching the pictures is far more useful.

did you test the voltages on this regulator with the tv connected as it should be used.

havent tested u33 yet. how do i know what v to expect on what pins? datasheet?
but i did say that i disconnected the LAMP pin wire (13 that was at 0v when connected to the psu) and then i was able to see 2.5v at the MB connector with the tv running normally (had to jump DIM and LAMP on the psu side tho)...so i dont think its MB issue at this point

what would be a good way to supply externally 2.5v to a given pin? how many amps do these signals expect? still a little shaky on ohms law type stuff :/ i did aquire some tools though recently and have been attempting to learn. i have this thing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-Ad...8AAOSwbwlXCz3G

To test put you meter on dc volts and black lead to chassis. Using the red lead report the voltage given on pins 1 to 8 as shown.

So let me get this correctly, right now the LAMP error signal wire is no loger connected to the MB board and you also have a resistor between the 'LAMP wire and the DIM wire, but is the DIM also not connected back to the MB? or it is connected to the 5VSTBY through a resistor?
