Command for checking response of remote unit

When I was writing code for a remote HF preselector, I implemented a serial command (AHOY) for checking if the preselector responds which this command is used for checking communication between the remote head and the main unit of a Philips FM91/92 transceiver.
Do you know of any other commands for checking response of a remote unit?

My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

on irc they also have the "ping" command to check the response of their irc bots and the reply from the bot would be "pong".
