Wanted: Motherboard Suggestions for Newer Build

Currently my best machine is a socket 775 Abit IP35 Pro with Q6600 processor, 8GB Ram and GTX 570 video card. For what I do, this is fine.

I'm looking to assemble a desktop machine using used components. Or would I be better off to buy a complete used machine, which would likely end up being some off-lease Dell or HP tower or whatever? Looking for a low cost solution. I don't need gaming or video editing power. Looking for durability and no flakiness with the ability to upgrade as needed. I will be running Linux Mint so Windows compatibility does not matter.

Is socket 1155 still current? I have seen the following boards: Asus P8Q77-M and Asus P8H61-M LE/CSM. They support I3, I5 and I7 processors. Are these good or would another manufacturer be better? My experience with Asus P5 boards is that they are junk.

What are the corresponding AMD boards. Are they still using socket AM3?

What are the pros and cons of Intel and AMD right now?

    Interested in your opinions.

Dosen't matter right now, those are sandy/ivy bridge chipsets and the Q77 is def the superior one. (H61 has no USB 3.0 support, among other things). H61 is 6 series cheapest chipset, Q77 is 7th gen series and a fairly well one too. USB 3, both have PCI-E 2.0 for other pci-e ports but ivy bridge chips support 3.0

q77 is newer and better, despite I think it has apaq polymers, it's still far superior than your q6600/ip35

You do need DDR3 (cheap). And a ivy bridge cpu.

beats the shit out of your q6600

your biggest performance enhancement would be an SSD

to answer your other question: no, it's not the latest, in fact ivy bridge is 2012, but it's architecture is much more advanced than core 2 (anything past nehalem has an integrated memory controller, which core 2 does not). Anything past that, I believe has an integrated pci-e x16 controller

      1st gen (LGA 1366): Nehalem
1st gen watered down (LGA 1156): clarksdale? irwindale?, I forget off the top of my head
2nd gen (LGA 1155): sandy bridge
3rd gen (LGA 1155): ivy bridge
      4th gen (LGA 1150): haswell
      5th gen (LGA 1150): broadwell
6th gen (LGA 1151 100/200 series chipset): skylake
7th gen (LGA 1151 200 series chipset): kaby lake
8th/9th gen (LGA 1151 300 series chipset): coffee lake

thats off the top of my head

AMD I don't know off the top of my head
