    LG Gram

This year I got a 15" 2020 LG Gram as a gift (well, mother paid some, dad paid some, I paid the rest, which was most)

    $899 amazon

I love this thing. Light, tough, thin. Battery is huge. They advertise it at ~20hrs but i'm pretty sure that is with everything as low power as you can get. It's got a massive 72wh battery (massive compared to the size of the laptop).

temps aren't the best though, with an i5 comet lake, isn't surprising for one this thin. Gaming (Age of Empires III-Can only do so much with Intel UHD graphics) is smooth, but even with silent mode off (fan kick up) it maxes at 96c, close to Tj. This is after I cleanly repasted it with AS5.

I've seen drop/torture tests on the 2017 version and it survived.

Me, my dad, my sister all popped in $500 each for the 17" version for my mother. Who has had an ivy bridge lenovo 17" for some time. Heavy, hot, and even with a 860 evo it's pretty fair performance but it is heavy. She wanted a lighted keyboard, and this has an excellent one

Yeah it has soldered ddr4 2666, with one SO-Dimm slot I added another eight. Funny cpu-z dosen't list anything in the soldered channel. Wait it probably has no SPD profile. Not a need for one as the bios itself takes control. It also, unlike the 2017 version has two nvme slots.

Impressive, a bit expensive, but just freaking wonderful. Would be better if it came with more than a one year warranty

Also this screen is freaking bright. With the LED turned all the way down it still strains my eyes, but I have sensitive eyes. Everything I can get is on a dark theme, with night light at 70%

My dad was using a old acer aspire 9500 laptop 17 inch from 2006 and finally wanted a new one so he bought a 17 inch LG gram from costco with the 1065 g7 chip, I love the 2560x1600 16:10 display the colors are inky and amoled like. however the trackpad placement is not alligned with the space bar and drives me nuts.

Luckily for him hes a hunt and peck typer.

2560x1600 on a 17" screen? Yikes! Shit would be way too small. I run that on 30's, and that was worried about it...

It's a tough critter, I'll give it that. Most modern heaps of plastic laptops with SSD's (no moving parts) could probably withstand that...but still pretty impressive.

The screen has some bend, as well as a slight bit of rubber around the bezel.

I love the touchpad. Only thing I didn't like about my asus Tuf 15 was the touchpad acted strangely

Windows built-in touchpad gestures are making things majorly easy for me. Three-finger left and right control back/forwards on webpages, three finger tap opens links in new tabs or activates the scroll cursor (equivalent to middle button). Four button tap opens up pornhub in private mode in firefox

Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.

                    Re: LG Gram

Seems like it's not bad, but perhaps it is something else, rebranded as LG. My objective opinion is that I will not buy something like this. Because it is limited in it's capabilities for expansion, even for laptop. Being extremely lightweight is not my primary criteria, when I buy laptops.
100Mbps LAN with adapter, soldered RAM and only 3 USB-s is not something that I have a desire for.
I want Express Card, 1Gbps or more LAN, 4 or more USB-s, DVD or BlueRay drive, serial, VGA, DisplayPort and Etc.
And docking port. This means that I can use a dock with discrete graphics card of my choice.
Nonetheless, congratulations. Let it be sturdy, so you have the opportunity to enjoy it for a long time.

How is the touchpad and keyboard? I find the touchpads of the new Lenovos hilarious and even barely functional.
P.S I didn't know that pornhub is some kind of benchmark )

I didn't know if the usb-c lan was 100mbps, I never used it. You can easily buy a USB-A 3.0 one that is gigabit for like $20-$30 on newegg.

                      Touchpad and keyboard are superb.

I can see why you would want something more advanced as you seem to prefer more commercial-wise stuff. Docking stuff now a days usually is USB-C which actually uses the onboard graphics channeled directly to the dock. Some don't.

Also what's the battery on one of those? Cause this one is like crazy 18-20 hrs if you change a few settings

I read somewhere that bundled LAN adapter was not even 1Gbps.
I'm glad that keyboard and touchpad are okay and you enjoy it.
As for the battery life, usual laptop with every port needed with 2 batteries can have 10 or more hours of battery life. You understand that LG Gram has 20 hours battery life because it doesn't have 2.5Ghz CPU and a bunch of ports.
I like laptops which I can drop, they can fall on the ground, I can splash liquids on them and they still work. And that are easy for maintenance.
I would just want say that mine has SSD and 2.3Ghz CPU that boosts to 2.5Ghz and is still not very suitable for intensive tasks.
I wish you to fully enjoy your laptop. I don't want to ruin your joy. Everybody has different priorities.
I always try to ensure myself. In case of unforeseen circumstances, like nuclear disaster. Haha. One of my flaws.

2017 version of the gram test has shown it surviving going down concrete stairs, as well as being stood on. The chassis does not crack, it dents like metal. Screen has flex, so it does not break like most screens. This cpu is 2.1 with a turbo of 4.2, but due to the limited cooling it sticks around ~3ghz.

This is easy to upgrade. The back panel has easy access to the hsfa, 2xnvme and the ram slot

liquid, on the other hand is a questionable. I know it can handle high humidity but liquid direct on it, is questionable

That's a very impressive battery. Hopefully it's not a flat-pack, though (although, I haven't seen 18650 batteries used in laptop in ages now), as their service life is nowhere near that of 18650-based packs. Not to mention flat-packs always tend to bulge after some point, and that tends to destroy things in the laptop if the batter is tightly enclosed (for any of you Apple Macbook readers here, you know what I'm talking about exactly. )

Not super-thrilled about the CPU running that close to Tj either. I really do appreciate how thin this thing is... but if they made it just a tad thicker so that it has more space for better cooling and better keyboard (I hate flat-crap keyboards), it would be a pretty damn good laptop.

Also, I don't advise people to replace the stock thermal compound anymore. Due to CPUs running so hot nowadays, manufacturers actually typically do use good quality thermal paste now that's more or less on par with AS variety.

Granted LCDs have sharp picture compared to CRT... but even then, I wouldn't go past 1280xwhatever on a 17" screen of any technology. I HATE having to squint at small text and icons.

                                  Probably around 3 years.
Manufacturers have gotten pretty good now about designing the useful life of the device for exactly as long as the -average- customer would need it to work. Thus, assuming 1 year manufacturers warranty (rare - most I see is 90 days now... but let's just ignore that for a second) plus 1-2 years extended warranty (be it Costco's additional 2Y warranty or separately purchased) puts it close to the 3-year mark... and that's when most people usually change their laptops anyways or get something "better".
