I don't know how much, and I soldered a socket to make it easier to change later.

Looks like something blew inside the socket?

blew in the socket and incinerated an inductor so hard it burned the electrolytc next to it!

What’s the part number on the IC?

The part number is LNK304PN. The socket pin (pin6) that is burnt should not have a connection.
The repair kits have other parts that are likely also bad.

Heh. Frying a W 1MΩ resistor by itself tends to need to exceed voltage rating for dielectric strength as well as thermal limits at the same time...

Then again, if it fails dielectric strength along the outside, then it'd dissipate less power internally...

Maybe the IC was inserted the wrong way around or a solder blob... bent pin etc.

maybe the chip has the same weakness as TOPswitch's and oscillates itself to death if the startup cap is poor.

The pin gap from the package MUST be removed from the socket to.
Is removed because of high voltage isolation necessary there and more, with pin removed is easy to not insert the IC wrong.

It's not a good idea to socket PWM-FET ICs, because they use the Source/return and Drain leads for keeping the IC cool. In a socket, this won't work and the IC will overheat.
