Re: MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 shows light, fan spin but no chime

Can you help with measuring point for PPVCORE_S0_GFX_REG please?
Meter in lowest resistance scale. Remove all power / no battery.

Measure with the meter probe on L9330, pin # 2 or any of the cluster of caps (+ = positive side of the caps).

What is the resistance to ground ? If possible, take a picture of the meter taking this measurement so we can be sure of the meter scale.

It is possible that the GPU is damaged from a high voltage surge onto this low voltage rail.

    Also - what is the voltage on the OTHER side of R5350 & R5351 = PP3V3_S0_SMBUS_SMC_0_S0 ?

      L9330 on pin 2 showing 21.0 on 200 mode @mon2.

      Pin 2 of R5350 showing 0.09 on 20V mode.
      Pin 2 of R5351 showing 0.11 on 20V mode.

        Post voltages for U9300; pins 17, 16, 25, 38.

Adding to your checklist - see attached. Post the voltage of each signal rail.

          Hi mon2.

          U9300

          Pin 16: 5.05V

          Pin 38: 3.30V

          SMC_ONOFF_L: 3.37V

Re: MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 shows light, fan spin but no chime

            hi.
            ALL_SYS_PWRGD: 00.0 on 200m mode
            PM_PCH_SYS_PWROK: 00.0 on 200m mode
            PLT_RESET_L: 01.4 on 200m mode
            LCD_PWR_EN: 00.0 on 200m mode
            LCD_BKLT_EN: 00.0 on 200m mode
Can you confirm that these are VOLTAGE measurements ?

            If yes, then
            ALL_SYS_PWRGD: 00.0
is not a good status and should be a non-zero voltage. This means that at least one of the power rails that collectively creates the ALL_SYS_PWRGD status pin is pulling down this output. We need to locate which one.

See attached. The ALL_SYS_PWRGD is built up of a number of power good status pins that are open-drain (each signal can pull the line LOW but there is no HIGH so it will float when the power rail is GOOD). This idea allows for multiple power good lines to be tied together without collision of logic levels.

Start with removing all power -> check the resistance to ground of the ALL_SYS_PWRGD line. What is the readind and meter scale ?

Next, if the resistance is not very low, carefully (!), flux and move each resistor in the attached screen grab. Start with only one and keep it on a single pad.

Then allow for the board to cool down -> power up to see if the ALL_SYS_PWRGD rail is no longer strapped to 0 volts.

Then proceed to remove the next resistor and so on. At least one of these lines is camping this 'OR'd share line' LOW.

So in summary, keep removing the resistors that are highlighted till we find out who is pulling this line LOW -> that power rail is NOT with good power.

              Hi mon2,

              Yes these are voltage measurements.

              ALL_SYS_PWRGD resistance: .491 on 2k mode.

                Hi mon2,

There is no R8162 resistor on my board here!

Re: MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 shows light, fan spin but no chime

Was R8162 removed ? I am not sure if it is stuffed by Apple / Foxconn or not but believe it should be there. This is a suspect. Make a note of it.

You will need to remove the other resistors as noted above to locate how many of the power good lines are ok or not.

What is the voltage on R8167, pin # 1 ?

                      Hi mon2,

                      I have not touched it.

                      R8167, pin 1: 3.33V.

Ok. But pin #2 of R8167 is 0 volts ?

This means that either R8168 or R8169 or both are pulling this common line LOW.

Remove R8168 and check if this common line returns to a HIGH logic level (~3 volts).

If it does not, remove R8169 as well. Check again.

Once the line is indeed at ~3 volts, solder back one of these resistors. Check again.

Any time the line goes back to 0 volts, then that line is pulling down the power good line and that rail is defective.

Post your test results. Next confirm that the voltage of that power rail by measuring at the inductor of that rail.

                              In post # 64,

                              ALL_SYS_PWRGD = 0 volts.
                              It is now ALL_SYS_PWRGD = 3.19V ?

It is worth noting now that neither fan is now spinning up when power is connected.
