    I want to intentionally short out a transistor for testing. How can I do it safely?

    I bought a cheap component tester that identifies transistors, diodes, fets, caps, and other things. So far it works good for components that are not broken.

    I want to see how it performs with broken/shorted components. If I were to pull a transistor off of a junk board, how could I cause it to short without melting it or starting fires? How about a MOSFET? Diode?

    You can use 10 Ohms resistor in parallel with for example; the Emitter and the Collector of the transistor to simulate resistance leakage but not dead short between C and E, your tester should show that it is bad.
