Dell Inspiron Mini 10 , 17v on power switch

Have a nice day to u all,

Need advice on MB KIU20 LA-9051P Dell Mini 10
First Come with condition, Power on just for a few second and off,
Plug power from my PSU show 0.002A - 0.025A, when I hit power on, the current not moving at all. JP42 ( on/off switch ) get 17v instead 3.3v as usual.
    5v and 3.3v is present, JBATT1 normal. What I have done :
    1. Flash Bios
    2. Reballing ICH7 Chip
    Problem still there...
Actually there is Acer As 4937G with same problem power switch got 17v.
Need advice from you all, what next...?

    Best Regards

Re: Dell Inspiron Mini 10 , 17v on power switch

      Hi mate,

This is strange issue which happens on some motherboards

I have face this issue mostly in Acer motherboards where you will have 17 volts near power button instead of 3.3 volts

But when you check pin 117 in EC/SIO chip it will read 3.3 volts.

I have solved this issue by replacing BIOS chip (re-flashed) in Acer motherboard once.

      So try replacing BIOS chip

Also check PQ1 on page 30.
      Good Luck

        Thx Cephei

re-flash bios chip with working one that I save before, exactly model and type.
Yes Indeed, you are correct, on EC/SIO pin#117 and #32 it have 3.3v
        PQ1 on #1,2 read 17volts and #3 read 18volts
        Is it normal ?

No its not normal. it should read 3.3 Volts

          Check PC9 for short

No short on PC9 and PC10
(Take out from MB and test with DMM)

17v is normal at 51_ON# upon plugging in the adapter. It should go low to 3.3v when you press the power button.

Check pin 100 of SIO for 3.3v before/after power button is pressed. This will indicate if BIOS is working normally.

                Thx for your replies whaldsz

there is no 3.3v before and after , it's that mean bios problem ?

possibly yes. try reflash the BIOS then check for 3.3v at RSMRST# again.

Your problem probably has to do with PQ1.

Hi there, Just want to share my case.

Sometimes on some laptop, 17-18v on power switch is normal. Try hitting power button, then turn off, then check voltage on power switch, if it goes back to 3.3v, then it is normal. I also don't know why it happens.

For turn on then turn off after a couple seconds, i have this experience where gate on 5valw to 5vs switching mosfet have abnormal voltage. So 5valw is having 5v then try hitting power button - gate has voltage from ec / chipset (i forgot). But the output on 5vs is less than 5v (it was around 3-4v). Then assuming mosfet is broken, try finding replacement and replace the mosfet. Then try hitting power button, power drop has gone, 5vs has 5v. Then laptop working properly. Try tracing the alw voltage to vs voltage switching.

Hopefully it has the same problem that i have experienced.

Bios problem usually is related to rsmrst# and s5_enable. But try it anyway, because it will not do any harm as long you have backup the original rom / bin.

i just repair one acer at your same case, 17v on power pin, but in my case i found some corrosion in the motherboard, i just clean the corrosion, and i found a cold solder in the corrosion part. RESOLDER AND DONE..

Thx whaldsz, Still same, no 3.3v before and after ( flashing bios 2x )

then you need to replace the SIO chip. also check if the crystal is giving out 32.768Khz.

51_ON# should be low in order to open PQ1's gate. 51_ON# is geting low when EC_ON is high. No RTC voltage, something is stoping SIO from raising that signal. Check for shortages on coils, and if OK, replace SIO.

hi, look at page 28, if the gate of Q12 is shorted to source, the 3.3V become 17V,
check if Q12 is shorted, if yes replace and try to mesure again.
