Re: The PacMan ATX Computer Case - cleaning and painting

The X300 is passive - in fact, ALL X300s I've ever had were passive - none had any active cooling. Not even the OEM models.

Funny, because most of the 9550/9600s I have are all factory fitted with active cooling. (even the cheapest Sapphire card has a form of active cooling - the X300s had NONE whatsoever, and at least the two OEM ones, Dell and NEC, didn't have any space for adding a fan either.)

ok, i looked it up on the wikipedia video card list of amd gpus. the x300 is supposed to be the pci-express version of the 9600 non-pro which is an agp card. it uses the rv370 gpu which is the pci-express redesign version of the rv350 gpu which is agp instead of using a pci-e to agp bridge chip.

this figures because its a low-end gpu. adding the bridge chip will just increase the cost of the video card so it was cheaper to just redesign the agp chip to work with pci-e but the verdict is open whether they screwed stuff up with their hasty and quick, budget oriented redesign like momaka said. it could also be that they did even more cost cutting and skipped the fan with active heatsink altogether on those x300 cards because passive heatsink is cheaper...

x300 cards are also supposed to have a 128-bit mem bus. the x300se is the 64-bit mem bus version of the x300. could be, manufacturers just didnt bother to follow the official specs and just slapped on how many vram chips they had on hand or didnt have. thus u could end up with x300 cards with only half the mem chip spots on the pcb populated...

Apart from the HIS which is indeed 128bit, the Gigabyte is a 300SE it seems, and the NEC card was a 600.
