    [SOLVED] M1 MacBook Pro clicking sound logic board 5V no power on A2338 820-02020

    Hello, I bought this Mac from a friend, he said that it simply stop working. The MacBook looks very clean but does not power on, stuck on 5v 0.42A, and sometimes display 5V and 0A (then 0.071A and again 0A).

    I opened it looking for some problem, it was not touched before for sure and the board is very clena, no spot of corrosion at all from what I can see. Voltage on multimeter of the board off the case it's the same, 5V 0.42A. But then I noticed this "clicking sound" come from the board ( I attached here the audio file).

    Looking on google I found this:

    "Differential Diagnosis for a clicking sound from system board with low voltage as measured by a USB-C amp meter.

    • Corroded or failed PP3v8_AON creation MOSFET. (Q5800, Q5820, Q5840.)

    • Corroded or failed PP3v8_AON buck converter IC. (U5700)

    ➤ Diagnostic Steps

    1. Measure voltage on PP3v8_AON. (Normal voltage = 3.8v. ) You will likely find that the voltage is low and pulsing slightly or completely absent. This confirms the diagnosis.

    2. Perform a visual inspection of the system board. This failure is very uncommon without liquid damage. Often times, you will find that one of the 3v8_AON MOSFETs will be corroded, or that U5700 itself will be corroded. If the MOSFETs (Q5800, Q5820 or Q5840) are corroded, proceed to the Repair Steps below for "PP3v8_AON creation MOSFETs corroded" below. If the PP3v8_AON buck converter IC (U5700) is corroded, proceed to the "PP3v8_AON buck converter IC corroded" repair steps below.

    ➤ Repair Steps

    PP3v8_AON creation MOSFETs corroded

    - Replace Q5800, Q5820 and Q5840 together. It's important to replace all 3 MOSFETs at the same time as if one MOSFET failed, it may have damaged the others. Replacement of U5700 is not necessary as long as it isn't corroded and as long as the clicking sound does not persist after replacement of the MOSFETs.

    PP3v8_AON buck converter IC corroded

    - Replace U5700. Replacement of the PP3v8_AON creation MOSFETs is not required unless they are corroded or if the clicking sound persists after replacement of U5700.

    Verify correct voltage on PP3v8_AON after the relevant repair is performed."

    I found no visible problem on Q5800, Q5820, Q5840 mosfets, neither U5700 IC.

    Then I measured voltage of P3V8_AON_VSW1 on L5800, and I got 0V.

    PPBUS_VMAIN_VIN_ISNS measured on C5800 pin 1 is 7.9V

    C5701
    1 P3V8AON_PVCC measure 4.33V
    2 GND

    C5702
    1 PP5V_AON measure 4.54V
    2 GND


    I will be really thankfull to anyone who would help me to sort out this problem and get back to life this Mac. I know I'm a real noob diagnosing problems, please be patient. Any advice is really welcome.

    Any power rail that you deem to be a lower than expected voltage, check its resistance to ground.

    Remove all power -> meter in resistance mode -> measure its resistance to ground to confirm if the load is 'normal' or perhaps a short. A low resistance could be due to a shorted cap downstream on this rail.

      then i cheked 3 big coils:

      1 P3V8AON_PVCC 327000 Ohms (32.7 in 200k scale)

      1 PP5V_AON 47700000 (477 in 2000k scale)

      No short seems to be present. Thats right? Thank tou so much Mon2.

      PS I re-uploaded the pics in high quality.

      I cannot tell for sure, but Q5800 does it seem a little "shadowish" ?

          1) resistance checks look ok.

          2) meter in voltage mode (20v or higher is ok).

          What is the voltage to ground of PPBUS_AON ? (measure @ F5200)

          3) the logic board is stuck @ 5 volts? It should be @ 20 volts if all is well with the CD3217 ACE controller ICs.

          That is, BOTH CD3217 controllers must be working for the 20 volt power delivery contract to be negotiated out of the PD power adapter. Be sure that you are using a known good and suitable power adapter for this unit.

          Attach the power adapter and measure (with care) the voltage of each LDO rail that is present on each of the CD3217 devices.

            I'm using a known good and suitable power adapter for sure!
            I must say that majority of the time when i connect DCIN multimeter display 5V and 0.42A but sometimes, after disconnecting a re-connecting again, display 5V and 0A (then 0.071A and again 0A)

              Ok, that's weird.

              I took another time measure when the multimater display 5V 0A, and that is:

              F5200
              1 PPVBAT_AON_CHGR_REG 12.30V
              2 PPBUS_AON 12.30V

              here, goes to 12.30 then 0V then again 12.30V and stay stable after few second.

              CF408
              1 PP3V3_UPC0_LDO 3.43V ,
              2 GND

              They are inverted! What is happening here?

                The ACE controller that is active should offer the voltage rails.

                In your last batch of measurements - you moved the power adapter to another connector? Then UF400 ACE controller was used ?

                  Nope. Just reconnected.
                  It does act the same on both ports, sometimes 5V 0.42A, sometimes 5V 0A

                  Anyway I keep hearing that popping/cralkig sound but I cant really identify where it does come from, but I guess the area is L5820, id does make this sound only when it takes 5V 0.42A

                    Ok, I realize that when the board is cold and connect to DCIN multimeter display 5v 0.4A and consuming 2W, the second time I connect show 5V 0A (both usb-c port). I was able to locate what is becoming hot using my lips (not so hot) when it takes 2W, and it is U5700 renesas chip.

                        12.3 volt on ppbus looks like bad t2 communication.

                              This could be marked as solved.

                              Upon replacing U5700 renesas chip from a donor board Macbook is fixed, perfectly working.
