    Help with antec trio 550w

    Hello.

I am in need of a better psu, currently running on a 550w LOGISYS
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817170019
That is all I could afford at that time, and being in a very tight budget to upgrade ($30) I pulled the trigger on a "defective" Antec True Power Trio TP3-550 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=190128556391

I'm good at soldering and electronic, used to work as rework specialist at jabil circuit reworking Cisco routers and Compaq laptops motherboards returns from assembly lines until the net stock crash and got laid off.

Therefore, after reading a lot in here at Johnny's guru website and overclocker's about antec and all the "bad" rap about them I was going to be a good investment in fixing this unit than buying another pos $30 psu.

I have not received the psu yet, once I get it, I will post pictures of all the internals and create some sort of work log for others too.

Please excuse the bad English, my first language is Spanish

    Please stay tuned for updates.

Americans must REALLY be assholes. Everyone is always apologizing for their English!

My first language IS English and I still suck at it.

jrafael: There's nothing wrong with your English - no ambiguity, simple, clean, easily understood. You'll have no difficulty fixing up PSUs once you understand the main principles and the common failure modes. Welcome aboard, and it's good to have a rework specialist on this board.

I'll second that...RE the English...its my only one and I am lousy at it too...

Yours was excellent no need to apologize for it

        Welcome jrafael

        RE: PSU
Yes from what I understand, design is ok just bad choice of caps.
Although Ebay's description of the fault wasn't what I'd call overly informative.

        posting photos is always helpful.

Your rework skills should serve you well with psu's and Motherboards

Be prepared to have your brain picked in that area here thought

Cheers hope its a simple fix for you

Congrat's on your choice of PSU for a 'rework' project

I thought the trio didn't use crap caps anymore? Just the smartpower, truepower 1 and 2 lines?

Re: Help with antec trio 550w

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome.

@ starfury1: I know, they only stated that the psu didn't power on? Therefore, it may be something as simple as a blow fuse (crossfingers).

I should have the psu by 07/12, first thing I am going to do is open the case and take pictures of all internals, then perform a visual inspection (flow fuse, buldge caps, burn marks, etc) take note of everything, depending of results of visual assessment will attempt to power on.

I have good digicam with a nice macro, so I am going to host hi-rez pictures in imageshak and post thumbnails to keep the post clean and low-band friendly.

                Update:

I received the psu, opened up, visual so far everything ok, fuse tested ok, I jumper the green an the black nothing happened fiddle the unit around reworked some cold looking solders and powered on, Turned of because I didn't have the fan on it, close the psu, didn't power on, check the mobo cable and only have power in the green and purple wire nothing else, connected to mobo, didn't power on.

Main cap its Hitachi, then some teapos, otc and some "j" brand ?, will post pictures later.

                  some "j" brand
Did the J look like a J combined with a P? They could well be JPce TUR series. Not the best, but not bad. Enermax uses 'em, too.
You know there's something wrong when you open up a PSU and are glad to find Teapos.
Why I don't buy cheap cases!

Re: Help with antec trio 550w

                    1) Check the voltage on the +5Vsb and all rails on the secondary of the auxiliary supply.
                    2) Replace suspect caps (Fuhjyyu, etc.) on the secondary of the aux supply. This includes all caps on +5Vsb, as well as any other secondary rails coming of the aux supply.
                    3) Replace the small electrolytic cap (~22uF) on the primary side flyback winding of the aux supply if it is present.
                    4) Check all the rectifiers on the secondary rails for shorts, especially on the +12v rail (this may require desoldering the leads of the rectifier, or removing bleeder resistors).
                    5) Replace the PWM controller IC as a last resort.
