Adding charger to job site radio

I have a Milwaukee M18 radio that I've been wanting to stick a charger in for quite some time. I have numerous chargers so that side is covered. I would like some thoughts on how to set it up so when I plug it in to 120 receptive it will switch from drawing power from the battery to charging it. Any thoughts? I won't have any problem putting in the charger and wiring it to the battery mount I'm just trying to figure out how to make the charger come on after the radio switches to AC

Is this the one you have?

The radio's battery get charged when the radio is plugged into AC outlet so while running the radio on AC it will also charge up the radio battery.

    'Battery Pack Protection
To protect the life of the battery pack, the radio will
shut off when the battery’s charge becomes too low.
If this happens, plug radio + charger into a 120V
outlet and charge the battery pack according to
    Charger Operation.'
    'Turning On/Off and Controlling Volume
Plug the cord into an appropriate AC outlet or install
    a battery pack.
Press the On/Off/Volume control button to turn
the radio on and off. The radio station (frequency)
is displayed. To display the time, press the CLOCK
button. Volume is restored to the last setting.
NOTE: When the Radio + Charger is running on
battery power, the display will dim after 5 minutes to
    reduce power use.
Rotate the On/Off/Volume control button to in- crease or decrease the volume.'

No sir it is not the model I have, sorry I forgot to put the model number of the radio I am working on. I will post it shortly, but mine does not charge the battery I bought it online and mistook the description. Should have known better it was cheaper than what it should have been

Re: Adding charger to job site radio

You probably will not be able to this because the battery has a protection board and the chargers for this battery also has some kind protection/ BMS board function to it

So I do not know of a way to do with out changing a lot of things in it and even then it might not work right

          One note

Most all new items that run off of battery or charging the batteries are setup that way and have a small power supply to run the radio or fan or spot light or they are one or the other but not both at the same time

Re: Adding charger to job site radio

Milwaukee has a radio that charges, and I know it would be a lot easier to get one but that is not what this is about, they have the charging circuit as a separate unit in the radio but the schematics I've seen don't show component levels for the boards so I don't know how they're switching from the battery supplying to charging. So I'm assuming all I need is something that would break the connection from the battery to the radio as soon as it's plugged in. The charger would share the AC current coming in

Can you show a picture of the power board of the unit you have

That is you need take picture of front and back of the power board and as close as you can and still get the hole board in the picture and make sure that when you enlarge the pictures you can still read the parts numbers

I can not make any promises that it can be done

2790-20 you have does not indicate that it has any charging circuit, it has convenient 12VDC output jack."
"they have the charging circuit as a separate unit in the radio but the schematics I've seen don't show component levels for the boards so I don't know how they're switching from the battery supplying to charging." So are we still talking about 2790-20 the model?
                From user manual of 2790-20:
                Battery Pack Protection
To protect the life of the battery pack, the radio will
shut off when the battery's charge becomes too low.
If this happens, remove the battery pack and charge
it according to the charger's instructions
                .
                Can we see schematic?

Re: Adding charger to job site radio

The AC input is only one amp that means that the maximum DC amperage is only going to be 2 to 2.5 amps at the most

You probably not going to be able to this with the power supply that in it

Like I said earlier you might be able to take a M12 charging board and put it in your radio
but you probably would not be able to do both at the same time

Even the Ryobi Boom box that I have is either plug in the wall or battery but not both at the same time ( it is made so you can not do this you can not even by pass it ) because where you plug it the battery pack cover it

And the unit that can do this they are lot more money than I paid for this one

The ones that can do both at the same time the switching power supply has an output of probably 6 to 10 amps the other ones that are not setup that way the output might be 1.5 to 2 amps

The filtering section of the power supply has to pretty good or otherwise you would get a lot of interference on the radio while the batteries are charging ( most chargers are not setup that way for the most part )

Re: Adding charger to job site radio

It's kinda confusing. Milwaukee 2790-20 has an AC power transformer and Power PCB inside only for powering the radio and 12V aux. cig lighter jack (I think). AA batteries for radio presets and the clock. It can run off 28V, 18V, 12V battery packs.

So from AC power looks like it has around 12VDC available but at low current maybe an amp or two. The Power PCB is pretty basic, just some rectifier & isolation diodes and a relay, radio and chip amp for the speakers.

I think it would need a boost-converter added to charge the battery packs- but at low rate; no quick charging would happen as the transformer is small.

Silly of Milwaukee for this radio to not charge their battery packs, when you have all the hardware like battery socket, line cord etc. there.

Re: Adding charger to job site radio

I guess they treat it as a load, like a flashlight but the AC power cord is just confusion.
I think the linear PSU is for low EMI so the radio has a chance, given all the interference an SMPS makes, if they'd put a "real" battery charger in this radio. An AM/FM radio next to an SMPS is very hard to make it work unless shielded.
What are you supposed to power with the aux 12V cig lighter? Is there a Milwaukee charger that takes 12V car battery cig lighter in?
