    120 volt ( AC LED Clip-on Lamp ) 48 volt LED module Hack

    I found these LED lights at Walmart for $3.50 Clearance priced

    I know ( I have to hit the Clearance items just about every time I am in this store )

    I took one apart it does not have the best power supply board but the LED module is very nice with heat a sink

    I bought 11 of them for a lighting project I going to do very soon

    The bendable flex rod is very nice the biggest complain is that the clamping clip is made of plastic
    Which probably only for a little while the plastic cover for the LED module and switching power supply is made from same cheap plastic

    The plastic that on this item is crap to say it nicely

    These two repairs where found with a ESR meter...> Temp at 50*F then at 90*F the ESR reading more than 10%

    1 Over Head Crane Current Sensing Board ( VFD Failure Five Years Later )
    2 Hem Saw Computer Stack Board

    All of these had CAPs POOF
    All of the mosfet that are taken out by bad caps

    It looks like line operate non-isolate single transistor buck converter, fusible resistor for the AC inout protection, since the 6 LEDs are connected in series, the output is around 18V or so.
    Not bad for $3.50 to play with.
    How bright is it? I may get some at my local Walmart.

      BTW, since those LEDs are mounted on the heatsink, if there is insulation breakdown on that heat sink, the heat sink will be at Line Voltage so be careful on how you handle the heatsink.
      I wonder what AC V you have if you measure between safety GND and the heatsink.

        No the operating voltage is 49 to 51 or so volts not 18 volts

        The ( LED module ) has 3 small LED in one module is my guess

        The out put cap is rated for 160 volts DC on the power supply board

        I will check the the heat sink isolation to the power rail sometime today I hope

        I have one question can these power supplys run with very low current load or no load so I can measure the working voltage

        ( I have not played with this type of power supply module at line voltage ( 120 volt AC )
        I have played with this type power supply boards but at lower voltages before

        I going to use a table top 48 volt switching power supply to power them

        Use these power supply for something else later

        The brightness is decent for it size as long as you do not put to much current to the module otherwise it heat up very quickly

        When I run the LED module at 48 volts the brightness is decent and the heat sink module stays cool to the touch

        Now when you go to 49 volts the heat sink module start to get real warm and brightness is a lot more but I am not going to drive them that hard

        I will take a photo of the box later on today

          Here is a photo of the box

          I have a correction to make on the voltage for the LED module at 48 volts it is than 10 milliamperes at 51 volts the milliamperes is about 20 and dose start to get warm

          The power supply that I am using only goes to 51.5 volts

            Here are the results of this test

            At 48 volts to run the LED module one lead of the meter to the heat sink and the other lead to the positive terminal of LED module there is a little over 12.5 volts

            This is a good reason not run this LED module on this type of buck converter
            When I look at this power supply module I had not seen this setup before and decided not to use them for my lighting project

            Thank you for pointing out what type of power supply this is and the part about leaking voltage to the heat sink from the LED module

            Now if you were to use it way it build it might not be a problem
            But I am going to mount these LED modules in a metal housing
            this would a problem

            I going to a insulation disk that are used in mounting t220 devices to heat sinks
            to keep from having problems with voltage feed back to the power supply

              Testing the AC Voltage as in original power supply you want to test is between heatsink and AC outlet safety GND, not to the LED connection.
              If you are going to mount in the metal case then you need safety GND which will be 3-prong AC plug unless your power supply is well made.
              Use current limiter of some sort, do not connect the LED to the power supply directly, the current draw of the LED is not linear, it will not take much Forward bias Voltage increase to shoot up the LED current draw.
              You should measure the current draw of the LEDs as they are with its power supply to find out what it is first since we do not know the spec of the LED.

                  power it up with the original supply, and read the voltage across one led.
                  then multiply it by 6.

                  then set your meter to current and put the probes across one led - see how hard they get driven.

                        They are connected in series. If one LED is bypassed by the AMP meter then the current may go up big time if the constant current circuit cannot handle one bypassed LED, OP can try and find out.

                              I guess keep us updated how long they work. I find that cheap LED module assemblies don't last more than a few years, if even that much. The cheap flexible 12V LED strips from eBay (and elsewhere online) usually die within 6 months @ 12V, simple because they are driven too hard (120 Ohm resistor in series with three series LEDs). At 9V, they work just about right. Not as bright as at 12V, though.

                                Which really does not make sense at all 62 milliamperes for one single LED on this module the heat sink could not handle that heat it gets warm very quickly I checked

                                I will be running at 48 volts @ 20 milliamperes which more realistic for this heat sink

                                I was going to use one of these for a night light but now I do not think so with out modificating the power supply or something
