    Should I use low ESR caps in TV power supply board, or will any kind suffice?

    does it matter? in a 4k tv power board?

    Some of the caps i see are classified as "general purpose" while others are low esr low impedance.

    The caps I'm looking at include....

    nichicon UPW, UHE, UPZ, URY
    rubycon PX
    united chemicon EKYA
    panasonic FR1H, FC1H


    sometimes it's not specified whether a cap is low esr or not.
    How do I tell if it's low ESR from the numbers?

    Look at the data sheets for each cap series.

      if it's 105' temp rated then it probably is low esr,
      if it's 85' then it isnt.

        all of these caps are rated for 105c

        i mean, anything bad with using low ESR caps from these brands for TV?

        my TV is blinking nonstop, once every couple seconds, and I think the cheapo HEC caps might be causing it, even though there are no bulging caps.

          A low impedance cap in a general purpose application should be OK. A general purpose cap in an application needing a low impedance part will likely result in the cap having a short life.

          So, how are the parts you're looking to replace being used? And do you know they are bad, or are you shotgunning? Shotgunning - replacing multiple parts without knowing any are bad, hoping one of them caused the problem - will burn time and money unless you get lucky.

            This is the 2nd board that has crapped out with this blinking issue.

            sounds like I'm ok with these low imp caps then.


            The caps are being used in the board attached.

            Since I don't have an esr meter, I'm going to remove each cap one by one and test with my multimeter

              multimeter wont detect esr or leakage failures

                welp. I'm just gonna buy all new caps then and shotgun it

                I measured all the caps after removal, and here are the numbers

                47uf 100v x2 actual 45.53 46.52
                680uf 25v x2 actual 683 678
                100uf 50v x2 actual 97.8 98.88
                10uf 50v actual 9.56
                82uf 450v actual 75.64
                33uf 160v actual 30.18


                i know they say tolerance is 20% +/-, but these measurements seem low on some of these cheapo caps.

                  That's what I do. Caps are pretty cheap, it's not worth my time to try to chase down one bad one. Plus, caps are generally consumables, they have a finite lifespan, if one is bad, others probably aren't far behind. Granted, there are some exceptions where a cap has been obviously cooked by a nearby hot component, etc. But if there's not an obvious reason, they all go.
