    SMDs and Solder/Hot Air Station...

    All,
Looking to solder some SMDs and using my Solder/Hot Air Station for more than taking Digitizers off Ipads/cellphones as I have done the past year or so with it.

From the examples I have watched on youtube etc seems like they use flux and Solder Paste...Is there anything special about the Solder Paste...If so, what should I look for in Solder Paste and where can I source it for a small project.

    Thanks
    Chris

Are you assembling PCBs ? then you use solder paste. If you are reworking/repairing already populated boards then decent flux and regular solder is all you need. Genuine Amtech 559 for me.
Solder paste is available from ebay, Aliexpress and your usual electronics suppliers, although in the many years I've been repairing, I've never needed it.
I also find using a microwave heat bag far easier for removing digitizers.

Re: SMDs and Solder/Hot Air Station...

Usually for soldering SMDs I use my soldering iron, 60/40 solder and flux.

I generally use hot air for unsoldering. I only use the hot air for soldering QFN, and devices with a pad underneath them that I can't heat with my soldering iron

I've use various fluxes but like this one
      https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/40g-tin-s...wAAOxy8HlSbCej

Or I use a flux pen

I bought some solder paste but have not tried soldering with it yet. It is stickier and harder to apply accurately than I expected!

        Microwave Heat Bag?

        I have seen the below before;

Can you elaborate on the Microwave Heat Bad Process?

        Thanks

It's a small cotton pillow with wheat sealed inside. Two and a half minutes in the microwave gets it warm. This is then placed on the screen to soften the adhesive. It can't get any simpler.

Whilst I had mine made for me, take a look at some ifiit teardowns for how they use theirs.

sounds like using a hot water bottle!

              Guys,
Ended up purchasing a heat pad similar to the below one (not at $90 wow but more like $65)

              https://www.ebay.com/itm/CPB-Heating...AAAOSwMxJbtGIc

Also ended up purchasing a 10CC of MECHANIC XG-Z40 locally (USA).

Also purchased a few more from China.

I hope to give things a go once the order from Mouser Arrives.

              Thanks for the help,
              Chris
