    MacBook Air 820-00165 Random Crashing

Hello. I have a random crashing problem on a 2017 820-00165. It has crashed during startup and the other day it froze for about 8 seconds after running for more than an hour, then powered off. I ran Memtest through the 4 passes and no errors were reported. The board is clean with no corrosion or previous work anywhere. I'm hoping someone has seen this before. if this is not enough I can provide more.

Below is part of the crash report.

Sorry, I meant to say that I have swapped out the SSD and WiFi / BT card. This problem occurs on battery and on charger.

I also did an Apple diagnostics on this computer and it was a complete pass. Very strange as there is no corrosion for previous work on this board.

        Try the SAFE MODE boot:

        https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3734077

        and post your results.

          Thanks mon2.
I put it into safe boot mode and it crashed after running for less than an hour without touching the computer. Next I tried to restart it and it froze for about 15 seconds after displaying the background but nothing else. No crash reports were made available after those crashes but I do have one from July 31st that I can share.

Is your CPU cool or getting warm / hot ? Perhaps you can check with an IR thermometer.

Maybe the CPU heatsink needs a fresh batch of thermal paste ?

Re: MacBook Air 820-00165 Random Crashing

I don't believe the CPU is overheating. I run fan monitoring software and it tells me that the processor operates between 30c to 59c depending on what's going on. It runs close to 59c when I'm streaming videos as a stress test.
This is a strange one because everything seems normal. When it locks up I still have a picture for as long as 10 seconds or so, then it reboots rather than powering down like the 820-3662 does with unstable VRM FETs.
My next option may be to do a light reflow over the memory to see if that changes anything. I'm running out of ideas and it appears that few people have experienced it before.

Yes, I agree. Have not seen this depth of a fault, yet.

On the reflow, do so carefully and do apply flux to assist. I need to post closure for an A1466 repair on another thread. Have it working but was fun to fix a few issues.

Specifically, @Piernov advice was great to review nearby areas that can corrode on the logic board. While doing my gentle rework, caused a short on the 3V42 rail. Had about 0.8 ohms to ground so lost the key power rail. After about 30 mins of testing my history on where the heat was applied, reviewed the SMC (TI device). Removed the corner stinky glue points with heat -> applied flux on each side of the BGA. Reflowed again till the BGA package started to "dance". You will hear a cracking sound when the balls are released off the board. Carefully nudged just a small bit by the edges a few times to remove any possible shorts. Did not remove the BGA off the board as this will then require reballing of the SMC. This worked 100% to fix the short I created in error.

This also fixed the corroded logic board. The customer (university student) was so happy. Three repairs shops told her to throw it out as the repair would be > $1000. One actually said "you worked the logic board too hard and burned it out". What ??? Sad. She bought and returned her 2020 macbook to Apple out of fear that they cannot be repaired.

Re: MacBook Air 820-00165 Random Crashing

It's been a while but I've finally come back to this MacBook Air. It's still crashing randomly and I have done all the know methods to solve the problem. I decided to do some measurements on the board and found that the resistance to ground for the CPU is 8.9 ohms. I don't have another board to compare to, but the Haswell processor is supposed to have 18-23ohms. Not sure if this is a red herring or not. Would anyone have an actual measurement?

Re: MacBook Air 820-00165 Random Crashing

Resistance depends on the CPU speed. I've got a 2.2GHz CPU on my donor pile that measures 10 ohms or so. IIRC, this one had the same intermittent shutdown problem and was an Apple FRU as well. Very likely to be a disappearing power rail or PCH control signal.

I've had a couple of these Apple FRU boards with weird intermittent issues. Is this board you have a FRU by any chance? I know these CPU's warp when they are removed for reballing or replacement. One guy I saw used .45mm balls (as opposed to .4mm) to accommodate that. So who knows.

I appreciate you checking reformatt. it doesn't look like it's an FRU. There are no stamps or stickers indicating that. There is also no sign of liquid damage or corrosion at all. the board is very clean. The processor is a 1.6GHz i5. I just sold 2 2015 MBAs so I no longer have anything to compare to. I'm not buying any more Intel based Macs given the sliding prices.
I too thought this is a power rail dropping off which is why I started doing resistance measurements. The crash reports all reference a timeout on the CPU.
