    Broken Dell Ultrasharp U2410

    Hello,

I own a Dell U2410 which shows some strange behaviour:

When switching on it shows a perfect image (when connected to my PC) for a fraction of a second and then turns off. The menu keys seem to continue working as they are still shining blue and react to presses with beeps.

Pointing at it with a strong flashlight I do see an image. So it is backlight related.

I already swapped all caps (except the 450V one) on the power supply board but that brought about no change at all. Here are some pictures of the boards. If you need some more close-ups just let me know.

    Thank you in advance
    Adrian

On the inverter board, check the resistance readings of all 7 transformers high voltage winding side , you can test each winding using the big tabs which are connected to the lamp assembly, there are 7 pairs of them.

      4,65k

      4,48k
      4,39k

I also measured the primary side. All are around 8-9 meg

may I test the inverter/tubes? If so, how can I do that?

I just opened the monitor up a little further and discovered the insane amount of seven tubes (which fits in with the amount of transformers I guess) which are U-shaped and probably impossible to replace. I do not know where to get one of those in case one is defective.

New discovery: it seems that the topmost tube has reached its end of life. Switching on the monitor it creates some screaming sound and some parts of the tube are not illuminated. I attached some photos.

What du you think about this and where can I get such tubes?

I would try swapping the transformer location to see if the problem will move to other lamp first.

I did as you advised and the lamp that is affected by the error I described is still the same one!

I wonder what the shipping charge to Germany will be, and I hope it will be packed very well for long distance.

I took out the "broken" ccfl and noticed one charred connector. After cleaning it, the monitor works perfectly! So there was a bad connection which caused arcing and charring. Now it should sit well in that socket. Thank you for the help nonetheless

You might as well inspect other sockets also, glad to hear you got it working. I was surprise you did not hear the acing sound and smell the Ozone.

Thank you so much Adrian, my U2410f had the same issue. In my case it was U-Tube Nr.4, but it had the same problem. I cleaned it and now the monitor just works fine. Unfortunately when i disassembled the LCD module, I made a little scratch in one of the "papers" that are between LCD panel and backlights. So for everybody else who is opening the panel: Make sure you do not touch this papers or you will see a little shadow on the screen afterwards.

                              I am so happy

Good to know that I could help you

Nevertheless the problem reappeared on the same tube! I guess something with the socket is wrong so I cleaned it in the process of removing the dirt again. Now I shattered one of the tubes I will soon report how well the tubes I mentioned above will fit...

You might just remove the paper and see what happens?

Hm ... I thought it is there for a good reason ?! Do you really think I can just remove it ?
However I am not sure if I want to go through the process of opening this monitor again (unless I have to).

One more note: When I cleaned the tube, I also broke a little plastic socket in the middle of the tube. Maybe I did something wrong, but it seems to be very fragile. Hopefully it doesn't matter much ...

Did you manage to dismount the tubes without breaking these little platic sockets ?

I guess the plastic mount is of no importance if you do not throw the monitor around and the tubes collide with the panel. I did not break the sockets, I levered the tube out with a plastic tool.

I do not think that the scratched paper can be removed without any impact on the evenness of light distribution but you could check whether the deterioration is worth the improvement due to the lack of scratches.

I can report that the tubes I ordered were perfectly packaged. They work just fine though being slightly too wide but they are quite flexible.
