    Burning Machine Computer Switching Power Supply did not end up in landfill

    This burning machine did not want power up Wednesday morning look a the computer and it did not powering up

    Took the switching power supply home and took it apart and found all the capacitors on the 5 volt rail bloated a couple of them on the 12 volt rail were also that way most of those capacitors were Teapo brand capacitors

    There are two daughter board in this switching power supply one is where the fan is wired to about half of those capacitors that are less than 100uf were way out of specks and the other half seemed to be ok

    The other daughter board must have to with the PFC portion basically the same story about half were way out of specks and the other half seems to test ok

    These two daughter board and there so many pins are a pain in the a** to work on a couple of the pin pads were lifting off of the board REALLY not a very good main board

    Right now I have a CD rom drive hook up and a LED module string hook up to and it seems to be working pretty good the voltages looks good

    I have also checked the actual results of this tester with another meter and the results were very good

    These two repairs where found with a ESR meter...> Temp at 50*F then at 90*F the ESR reading more than 10%

    1 Over Head Crane Current Sensing Board ( VFD Failure Five Years Later )
    2 Hem Saw Computer Stack Board

    All of these had CAPs POOF
    All of the mosfet that are taken out by bad caps

    Ran it overnight and everything was good with the switching power supply with the load that I described earlier I turned it off and on quite a few time over a period of time

    However the the computer board had other ideas and issues
    One problem was the C-mos battery was dead and causing boot up issues

    The computer board need a good cleaning

    After getting these issues corrected now it boot up

    Now I have to see what happens when I put it back in the machine and see how it works then

      Put the computer back in the machine and it power up and it booted up and loaded the program that it was suppose to open and everything seems to be working correctly

      We shall see if and when we do this project for this customer in next couple of days if everything works the way it should

        Update

        The burning machine is back up and running normal which is a good thing because we are cutting a customer project

          How old is that PSU? Based on the several rated currents, I'd guess ca. 1999.

            Your guess is pretty good around 2000 s or so they can not remember exactly when they got the machine

              One a very sad note

              Our last day at this location is September 15 they are closing this location permanently

              On a brighter note

              A company that I have worked for repairing there servo controllers is thinking about hiring me when this location closes

                  This is was the final nail in the coffin that seal our faith unfortunately

                  Before this COVID-19 we going from some what busy to what we concerned normal

                  Then when COVID-19 hit this was bear-ly busy to not much work at all this was for about a month

                  Corporate had cut our staff in about half at first about a month after the COVID-19 hit this was a “permanent layoff “ ( do not think that they offer them a severance package because these employees had not been with us for more than a few years to only months ) but I do not know the details of the first round of cutting staff

                  This happens about two months later———>

                  Then corporate came in one morning and “ permanently terminated “ ( this is not a mistake in words they did offer a severance package to these employees you had three days to decide to take this package and mail in your signed forms to HR ) this was more than half of our staff and keep a few people to close our
                  location down ( for the employees that were asked to stay they offered a bonus for staying on and a severance package to close the facility you had to make your decision that day and sign forms

                        I was laid off last November (Thanks Giving week) after 25 years along with other long long time employees with the company, we use to have over 300 people in this location, now it is down to less than 30.
