    Dell Latitude E4310 slow boot

    Latest BIOS A15

    Fastboot: Minimal

Boot Device Options: Modular Bay HDD (1st) & USB Storage Device (2nd)

Something wrong with primary SATA which has previously corrupted an SSD, so has SSD in caddy occupying optical drive bay

Takes >10 seconds from power on or restart to show Dell splash screen

Can I do anything to improve this? - is it timing out detecting no device on primary SATA, or ??

That is possible. Even an empty Sata controller can make extra delay. but it is not common to happen. An ME issue is more probable. you can follow the instructions in the following post:
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...23&postcount=5

what have you found on the Sata that you think it damaged the SSD?

      Thanks Caspian

      Started off thinking about https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...83&postcount=8

But same issue - what would I use to read or write the BIOS?

Flashrom produces a severe warning, and Dell BIOS updater is all-in-one locked up

you need to desolder the Bios IC and reprogram it using a flash/EEPROM programmer.

          Thanks again Caspian

I might have to just live with slow boot in that case

I bought Latitude with issue disclosed that it couldn't run Windows from primary SATA

Didn't examine hardware - just tried a known working Patriot Blast SSD

Afterwards SSD seemed to have lost its firmware - as I recall symptom, SSD's controller was communicating with computer (different one) but wasn't aware it had any storage

I raised case with Patriot, requesting software which could low-level format the SSD, but after some back-and-forth they issued RMA instead

Does the Sata HDD boot fine in this laptop now?

I haven't tried a HDD on primary SATA

Corrupted SSD had to be returned to Patriot in Taiwan

Different SSD works fine in a caddy using the optical drive bay

it is possible that some pins on the SSD connector are shorted or have bad voltages. So, do not connect another SSD to that connector.
