    Re: Tumble Dryer start capacitor

if this wiring diagram is correct why does this motor needs to be reverse-able I have never seen a dryer with this feature what would the purpose be

Some models DO reverse, it prevents clothes from being rolled into a ball and not drying properly. A reverse action tumble reduces creases, which means less ironing once your clothes are dry.
And this from a similar service manual

        Re: Tumble Dryer start capacitor

I read it in a service manual for another Hotpoint Aquarius tumble dryer AQC851. It has an "anti-allergy program" that uses two directions, so the drum must have strange tines. The motor has the same three leads and cap. That model needs a hardware dongle to do tests and read fault codes. What a scam.

If it does reverse, then there is no start winding. I would suspect the capacitor is low value at load or mains voltages? Compared to a multimeter test.

The motor is used in many other models.

Look at this video and see if your motor look like this one
If not show a picture of the front of the motor where the belt is

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4uJOmCyG1U

Watch it until he shows where the motor mechanical speed switch assembly is and what is behind it
This is what I was talking about earlier

I tried to look up the model number and could not find a manual for it

Yes the dryer is reversible it changes direction when in use.

If my motor has a switch it must be inside the motor housing as its not visible.

Would it be worth me getting a start capacitor to try or should I remove the motor to have a look inside the housing?

              Re: Tumble Dryer start capacitor

Redo the ohmmeter test. With three motor wires, there should be continuity between any two wires. No open circuit.

I get the same as before 30 ohms between red and white and OL between red and black and OL between black and white.

If this is the case then the motor is probably not good

but if there is a relay in it, you have nothing to lose trying to open it.

You have a good point you have nothing to loose I would open it up

                        Re: Tumble Dryer start capacitor

Why risk damaging the relay by opening it, when you know the motor winding is open? find a used motor or open your motor and see if there is just a broken wire, maybe you will get lucky and be able to repair the motor.
I see used YXH80-2A, motor and capacitor for £16.99

                          Re: Tumble Dryer start capacitor

The motor has an open-circuit on the black wire, take it apart.
You might be able to find the break and do surgery to fix it. Or just get a replacement motor. It might be broken from a tug on its leads.
In the pics I see one winding set is a darker colour than the other which is weird.
The relay is on the control board, I'd leave it alone for now.

                            Re: Tumble Dryer start capacitor

I have taken the motor apart and think I've found the problem, I have a break in the winding wire.

As can just about be seen in the image I pushed the wires together and now get about 60 ohm's from red to black and about 30 ohm's from black to white.

Could I solder the wire together?

Would i have to be careful not to remove the enamel from the wire, i have some uv cure solder mask could i cover the wire with this to insulate it.

You should be able to clean the enamel and solder it, If you can expose a bit more of the wire that would be better but if it's held in by the rest of the winding that might be tough. Try and secure the wire that is connecting to where it is broken so there won't be any stress on the solder joint. slip a piece of heat shrink or even a thin piece of plastic tube over the longer wire first, then slide it over the solder connection.

I've fixed the motor and the dryer seems to be working fine, so thanks to all that helped.
