hardly new,
i remember early experiments with magazines putting floppy records on the cover with 8bit games on because it was cheaper than tapes.
i also remember a tv show for gamers that had a "datablast" where they transmitted small games and demo's in the audio track for you to playback to the computer from a vcrComment

records, being flat, are much easier to distribute with magazines... alas still more expensive than printing hexdumps in the magazine themselves
