    Biostar Geforce 6100-M7 toasted OST's

This is a Biostar Geforce 6100-M7 board in an arcade game. There are a couple blown OST caps near the corners of the board.

I noticed that they are using a 20 pin PSU (Sparkle FSP270-50SNV) on a 24 pin connector, but I doubt that it caused the bad caps. The CPU fan also seems tight. I'm not sure what CPU is installed on it because I didn't want to power it up.

Another odd thing I noticed was that the CPU fan has a tag on it with a picture of a crossed out garbage can. Could the fan contain lead or something?

Well, those suckers can`t stand against heat nor ripple current.
Guess my system is getting unreliable, probably the 16v Ost at the PCI-E interface on my Asrock Dualsata II are blowing out the magic smoke.
They are the same like in your pic.
I already pulled a few near a small Buck regulator probably for the chipset voltage, but was lacking the 16v ones, that time.
As i was using a molex powered AGP card, i never get me into the hassle to recap them.
No i got some strange VGA S3 power safe resume problems, which dissolved after i reduced the 2d core speed of my PCIE X800GTO.

I replaced all the bad OST 6.3v 1000uf with Samxons, and the board is working now. Biostar runs the traces extremely close to the cap leads! I was afraid of scratching a trace, even with the 0.8mm desoldering nozzle.

Another thing I discovered is how invaluable a good pair of dedicated lead cutters are. Up until I got a pair, I'd been using common "wire cutters" to trim off the cap leads, and it always left a messy pointed solder joint, if it didn't scratch the board or tear off the trace in the process

I'm kind of wishing I would have replaced all the small 100uf OST caps that were on the board too, since almost all boards I've recapped from arcade games have even the smallest caps out of spec due to long runtime and very high temperature.

          recap that psu too.
i get a bunch of those in from game refurbers and they often contain fuhkkyu.
esp +5 open and the caps on the mobo get to eat the ripple.

Hey good to know, I'll have to have a close inspection of my T-force board...

That crossed out garbage can sticker is due to the new WEEE directive that's come into force recently. Basically, it means that electrical/electronic equipment and components are NOT to be thrown away as normal and put into landfill. They have to be stripped down and the parts recycled by specialist companies.

I think you'll find that every piece of electronic equipment manufactured since last year, even things like TV remote controls, will have that symbol on them.

It's something to do with protecting the environment - chips and other electronic devices may contain chemicals that could damage the environment. Ozone layer, polluting water, contaminating the air, you name it!
In addition, some of the chemicals used in electronic devices could cause an explosion if put into fire, or as they decompose and the gases mingle...

That reminds me of a brilliantly worded warning in a manual for a dual-mode webcam/digital camera I once had. "Putting the unit into fire is inhibited less to hurt anyone by explosion or to damage the enviroment"
You know there's something wrong when you open your PC and it has vented Rubycons...

The PSU seemed fine, it had larger Teapo's in it and a good fan. It's only a year or two old; if it was more I'd definately recap it.

Hmmm... FnF Super Bike? Just had one DOA. One visibly blown cap. One very dead video card. Replaced the cap and hope it runs today. Can't find the board in stock anywhere. Manufacturer wants way too much. They will replace whole unit or nothing.

The 20 pin male in the 24 pin power connector was odd to me.
