Will attempting to do so fail without causing damage ?

It will work or fail without damage.
Things I've fixed: anything from semis to crappy Chinese $2 radios, and now an IoT Dildo....

You must have a sad, sad boring life if you hate on people harmlessly enjoying life with an animal costume.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

Re: Western Digital Hard Drive Not Bootable

        Code:
        /dev/sdb:
         issuing DCO restore command
         HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(dco_restore) failed: Input/output error
Ok will have to locate a boot disk and try again installed internally on the sata port.

Will report back later, thanks for the help.

Out of curiosity, what absolute POS drive adapter do you use that doesn't even sport the full range of basic commands?

Lol before you get too upset at my drive adapter you should know that this command failed again with the exact explanation on the internal sata port of my desktop. There is a different problem here by the looks of it.

no firmware updates available, so it looks like a secure erase might take care of it, but first paste the output of smartctl -P show /dev/sdX i would imagine that someone has seen one of these buggers and reported something...

nothing reported there. go ahead with the secure erase. secure erase erases *everything* DPO, HPA, bad sectors, etc.

From a hardware's point of view seems seems an awful lot of nonsense just to to get one little HD to behave.

I thought the content was simply encrypted with an "unknown" key making the contents useless except inside the box ?

Anyway I issued the security erase which I thought didn't work because the drive stopped responding to even the commands it did before the erase but after reboot it was recognized by the bios. However since there was no OS on it I booted back into the Ubuntu live cd and installed Ubuntu only to find I was back in the same spot as before - no bios recognition.

                              Very strange.

+1 i know a Comcast engineer, who worked for echostar also, who will confirm it too! also google "unlock original xbox hard drive"
some of the "security" implemented on these DVRs is built like a Brick shit house.

well, i think we have Bodgy firmware for sure. you could try this though
Reformat DVR hard drive for PC use

if you though this was "nonsense", doing it the way above is plain fuckery!
if it was me i would be beating the thing senseless all the way to the rubbish bin....

SUCCESS! Or as Dubya might say, mission accomplished.

The kicker was in your last link. I wasn't imagining that when I rebooted the pc the bios would recognize it but when I powered off it was locked again. It was the PUIS - Power Up In Standby. Disabled that as directed and the drive was finally good.

Thanks for sticking it out, man. Really appreciate it.

The kicker was in your last link. I wasn't imagining that when I rebooted the pc the bios would recognize it but when I powered off it was locked again. It was the PUIS - Power Up In Standby. Disabled that as directed and the drive was finally good.

Thanks for sticking it out, man. Really appreciate it.
                                      no issue!
i had a backlog of 12,000 (yes, thousand) drives to be DOD wiped and surface scanned/SMART tested, so i worked with a buddy of mine to build a server just for doing that and have it all scripted.

he is an engineer for Comcastaway so i had him do the scripting and i did the hardware. i learned the bugs and strangenesses of every drive out there...

these WDs seem to have some strange quirks.... anyway, these drives do have modified firmware to track more like a DVD than an HDD, that is done to prevent lags in recorded video but causes some odd wear patterns, just a heads up.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

Making it secure and making it unusable are two separate things. It should not take an electronic engineer to get these things to work. I would think the people writing the protection program are not able to figure out how to protect their programs without causing great deals of frustrations to regular users who just want something to work. Seems to me if they sat down with a hardware engineer some easier methods would prevail for the the same or better security and yet allow the user access to his equipment.

I'm glad mmartell was able to get it working.

This has been an interesting thread and I'm pleased a solution was found.
