    Wirewound Cement Resistor Ceramic explanation

    exemoel :10w 20Rj what Rj means? is there anyone who can refer where I can buy 3w + 30kohms cement resistors or higher value for example 40kohms but 3w or what I can I use instead if I can not find

    10W = 10 watts (ceramic block)
    20 = ohms
    R = Resistor, or the decimal point
    j = 5% tolerance.

    So no, the 30KΩ resistors won't be the same thing. You could get two 10Ω 5W resistors and stick in series.

    Incidentally I don't see much use for a 10W 20KΩ+ resistor these days in modern consumer electronics... You'd need hundreds of volts to dissipate that much power to need a resistor that big and it's indeed just wasting that power. Vacuum tube circuits (including CRTs)!? All bets are off.

        All power resistors will be ceramic. Pretty much everything else has a risk of melting or immolating. I already gave you one option if you can't find the exact value, but they too will be ceramic.
        I don't know what sources you have available locally. I'm sure mouser or digikey will have exact replacement units.

          Modern resistors and capacitors follow the EIA standard for values. Example is the EIA-12 is twelve values for the decade, used for parts that have +/-10% tolerance: 100, 120, 150, 180, 220, 270, 330, 390, 470, 560, 680, 820
          In that your 30k woud be closest to 27k or 33k, and 40k closest to 39k.

          Next is for +/-5% EIA-24 values for the decade: 100, 110, 120, 130, 150, 160, 180, 200, 220, 240, 270, 300, 330, 360, 390, 430, 470, 510, 560, 620, 680, 750, 820, 910.

          But it would be still hard to find 40k at several watts, they are not popular and not a standard value really.

            Thanks eccerr0r and redwire the two 10k ohms are not enough and as redwire said it is not easy to find the 40k then what can you have instead?

              Perhaps get 3x 10-KOhms 1-Watt resistors and hook them up in series. Total resistance will be exactly 30 KOhms and the power ratings add up - i.e. 1W+1W+1W = 3W.

                I thought so but where can you find 10k 1w the ones I find are 5w we are talking about Wirewound Cement Resistor of course but it gets clumsy there are no other alternatives?

                  for 1w you can use metal oxide / metal film type

                          A Shorted wirewound resistor?

                          This resistor is from an ATX APFC PSU that connects bridge rectifier negative to primary capacitor negative
                          I think that it's a current sensing resistor for the APFC
                          Is it correct that it's color code indicates that it should be 0.47 ohms?
                          I measured it to be around 0.08 oms
                          The PSU blew up (visible arc flash) after problems with a powerstrip, but i got it working now after replacing the 10A fuse, rectifier, etc and removing/shorting the APFC diode locations and using a jumper in place of this PFC current sensing resistor
                          I don't think that APFC likes being connected...

                          Hi

                          I am trying to repair an ancient Dell 2209WA Monitor which suddenly shut off with a pop sound. On investigation found that one of the fusible resistors had blown. Further investigation identified multiple components as faulty because of which the fusible resistor blew. Please refer the attached circuit diagram showing the components that were found to be damaged.

                          1. FR950 - blown fusible resistor - 0.2 Ohm 1W
                          2. Q950 - shorted Q950 MOSFET - 650V 10A N Channel Mosfet
                          3. R835 - Blown Resistor - 20KOhm SMD resistor
                          4. D930 - Shorted Schottkey Diode...

                          Need help to replace burned resistor in 350w atx psu
                          by mikey5791
                          Hi to all forum members,

                          Got this faulty 350 watt atx psu dirt cheap from a local online seller as i am keen to use it as a learning tool to repair faulty power supply.
                          The faulty part is quite obvious from the burn area near the 16pin KA7500 BD pwm. The fuse is still intact with good continuity.

                          Upon power on ac, there is 5vdc standby power on cathode of diode D14 and about 10vdc on cathode of diode D13.(This should be the aux power to generate the 12v and 5v rail.)
                          Initially i replace the two burned resistors near my marked red arrow to 200 ohm resistor...

                          Can a resistor lose resistance after hot air?
                          by MidnightRoller
                          I am curious if a 0402 resistor could go from 43 ohm to 0. In electronics class and my experience a resistor can degrade and gain resistance all the way up to not being able to conduct at all. I have never heard of a resistor decreasing in resistance and becoming 0 ohm or a dead short… that's not the direction they fail… or so I thought.

                          I was attempting to remove a wson8 chip on an iMac motherboard and it required a lot of heat, on one side of the chip were 3 0402 resistors that were very close. I popped the chip out unintentionally out of the tweezers and sent those resistors...
