Polkaudio DSW PRO 500 not switching on solved

Good afternoon, unit came in not switching on.

Found burned & cracked diode.(photo.1) Replaced with FR307.(photo.3) and cleaned up the burned debris. Looks like diode has generated a lot of heat.
Wonder if during assembly they could have placed the foam suspension else where. (photo.2)

Unit would still not switch on, missing 12v & 5v supplies.
The diode supplying the voltage to the 5v regulator when scoped had a large ripple on it. (photo 4)

    Replaced C12 220uf/10v(photo 5),
and hey presto unit up & running! (photo 6)

I don't know if the FR307 (CRT TV line output flyback diode) is adequate.
The diode feels warm to the touch, and wonder if any one could comment on this.
I googled the specs' of diodes I had in stock, and this one seemed to fit the bill. Thanks.

What is the P/N or the broken diode? That looks to be the snubber diode.

Hi Budm, looking at one of the photos it looks like it could have been incorrectly marked as C7 instead of D7.

The diode was broken, but it looked like a S3V76.
I couldn't find a data sheet for S3V76, but found one for a S3V60 which said the diode was Vrm 600v & Io 3.5 amp.

So I guessed the specs of the S3V76 is a Vrm 760v & Io 3.5 amp.

The anode connected to the 300v mains rectified supply, and the cathode to the drain of the pwm ic P6KE18. (pins 5,6,7 & 8).

The drain of the pwm ic then connected via a reversed diode to the transformer supplying the voltages to the 12v & 5v regulators.

Thanks for the links, I must get a chance to try fill my cranium

Grunder-- Thanks for posting this. The low volt supply on my Pro 600 board was so blown apart I could not identify U1 KEH807 until I came across your photos. Polk refused to tell me what this 72 cent device was and suggested I buy a $300 replacement amp. On mine, the diodes D4 and D5 are burnt as well as the larger diode oddly marked C7. On the capacitor replacement, your picture shows you pointing at C17 but your description says C12. Assume it is the former. Also have the leaky C101 on the power amp board, widely reported issue with this amp. Again, thanks for the help.

Would anyone please be able to identify the value of C14. It's a ceramic cap and mine is burnt to the point I can't identify it. Thanks for any help.

.001uf +/-10% 1KV, I would update it to 2KV rating, it is snubber cap.
BTW, the brown glue must be removed, it is conductive and also corrosive as it ages, you can see the leg of the C14 cap is eaten away by the glue.

Didn't even see that until you mentioned it. Had to zoom way in to see it clearly. Thanks.

                  Hello all,

I am new to this forum, but seem to be having the same/similar issue with my Polk DSW 660wi. When I turn on the amp, the speaker thumps 4 times and then I get nothing. I checked and found that I have no 5v or 12v on the power supply board. I was going to replace the "C12 220uf/10v(photo 5)" but I checked it for power (with a simple volt meter) and it had 5v. Do you think I should just go ahead and change it anyways?? By the way, my board has no burnt spots or any diodes that appear to be damaged - I just don't have any 5v or 12v output.

Re: Polkaudio DSW PRO 500 not switching on solved

Well, I might have more issues than I originally thought. I also do not have any power out of the 36v, 48v, or 53v output. I checked the large capacitors (3300uF 63V) c25 and whatever is right next to that one (the glue is in the way) and they have no voltage when the power supply is powered on. I am trying to upload some pics, if they will help. If anyone has schematics of this board ,or a similar one (the 500 or 550 board seem very similar) I would greatly appreciate it.

                    Thank you,

                    - New guy

Can you provide good clear straight shots pictures of the whole top side and bottom side of the boards so I can give you the test points to test?

Thank you for getting back to me. Here are the two best pics I could get. There are two large foam pieces attached to the bottom of the board that I will try to remove if I have too - I just didn't want to take a chance of making my issue worse unless I had to take that chance.

I was able to contact someone at Polk and I got this schematic. It is for a PSW660 / but looks like it is the same power supply as the 550 and 440 as well.

After, checking and doublechecking and retracing my steps / I realized that the status led would turn red / then green / then back to red in about a second after turning on the unit. I had no power at 12V or 5V because the board was going into protection mode. It seems that the chip (STA516B) on the amplifier board has failed (see pic). From what I can tell / it appears to be a direct short. I'm not sure if this is repairable or not (far too small for me to be able to attempt).

I guess I'll be looking for a new amplifier for my sub

Good to find this post, I too have the same sub - no power at all, no lights. I pulled the PCB panel out and see the ceramic looking things appear exploded. Back when I purchased this in 2011, I really did not use it much and it was in the basement for the past 6yrs unplugged. Sounds like a defective set of electronics. I did email polk to see what they say...but is this an easy enough task to desolder and replace the blown stuff?

                                Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum. This was a pretty informative post for me. I am trying to fix a DSW 500 pro with a similar problem. Its did not turn on at all, so I opened it up and found three sections heated or burnt.

I changed some diodes, capacitors, ICs and resistors.

Now the amp powers ON, led is green. But the two resistors next to output plug heat up a lot and i am afraid there is some underlying issue and they will blow up again.

I did not play the sub much, but it does play but it feels not with full power.

Can someone give me some insight into how to proceed?

Also, can someone give me the value of these 2 resistors? I am using 300ohms 5W. I could not get them from the above wiring diagram posted above.

Here is a screenshot of my board now after replacement.

Re: Polkaudio DSW PRO 500 not switching on solved

                                  Its working.

                                  I finally got it working.

Originally, it did not power ON at all.

I replaced all the components in the burnt sections as shown in the attached pics.

The only components I could not get were the two resistors right next to the output connector. I first used a 300ohms 5 w (the blue once in pic) but they were heating up too bad (the amp was working, but I was afraid they will blow up). The schematic diagram shared by a member above shows these to be a 3kohm/2w resistor (I miss read the colours on the resistors i pulled out). So I checked the ones I had pulled out, they were 2.9k both. They were a little brown but they seemed ok, so I soldered them back and amps working now and resistors are also not heating up.

In total all components costed 10$ but a lot went into research and finding components online.

                                  This blog was extremely helpful.

I hope this will help someone fix a similar problem.

great forum, i'm new to it,

I am having same issue(s) with a Polk DSW Pro 550wi (wireless card added) and would like feedback.

Issue may be the TVS1 (P6E...) since it is the only brown on the power board, see pic 1.

The amp board doesn't have any issues evident to me. See 2nd and 3rd pics. Are the brown spots on the adhesive reasonable?

For troubleshooting, i should check for 5 and 15 at the connector leaving the power board? If it there, it's likely the amp?

                                    thanks

Its powered on ( Blue LED is on ) but no sound. Volume level High at 40 ( 4 long Blink)

Its went into standby mode after 10 min . What could be the issue?

Thanks to this forum and people like Grunder and others who posted some pics I could replace few spares and so far it's working. Found if I didn't replace C12 D7heated up again.

                                        Thanks for the effort guys
