hello, i have a desktop board, asrock h81m-vg4 rev 2.02, its powering on but no dusplay, and aside from that, it shut off after 1 minute and then automatically power on and then after 1 minute again it shut off, its repeating...
what i done so far is isolate everything from the board, i reset the bios, reseat the ram, change the ram, reseat the cpu, change power supply, i also clean the me region of the stock bios, flash bios came from asus website... but still the same problem... has anyone encountered this issue? or anyone can help me? thank u very much

With the power OFF, use a multimeter in resistance mode and then check the resistance to ground for each coil on the board.

What you are looking for are low resistance values on the coil which may indicate that you have a shorted cap that is causing this power cycling.

What is the history of this logic board? Any liquid damage or just decided one day to not power up ?

Often, caps that are polarized (ie. TANTALUM style) die over time and cause a short circuit condition on the power rail which then forces the upstream power supply IC to power down to prevent damage.

hello, i already testes coils on and they are all fine, not shorting to gnd, the board is new, and no water damage, co ponents on it is fine, no physical damages

its exactly shutting off after 60 seconds, and power on automatically, no display

I have the same problem with a GIGABYTE H81M-DS2 it just keeps boot cycling tried all the usual stuff but no luck.

Can you be more specific as to what you have tried when you say 'the usual stuff'? Do you have a POST analyzer card, and if so what is it doing?

Have you tried reprogramming the BIOS, and are you sure the CPU you have fitted is compatible with your BIOS revision?

Do you get the same cycling both with and without RAM fitted?

Hello Rich, thanks for the reply, I really enjoyed reading your post about trying to fix 780tis, it was cool. Im trying to do the same with an old GTX 550ti that I Got.

So it was supposedly working when i got the motherboard, i was testing with a i3 4330 cpu and 4gb of ddr3 ram which are confirmed working parts.

So these boards have dual BIOS which has 2 bios chips, so in theory it will flash itself if you hold the power button down. Ive tried that and no luck.

nothing appears on screen and it starts up spins fans, shuts off, starts up spins fan shutoff, its possible its a short on the low level circuits?

Very often RAM-related issue can be the cause of power cycling (so something around RAM or CPU which has integrated memory controller). POST debug card would help.

Ok this is helpful, ill try to clean the contacts up a little and see. but say if it were power related how would i check if the power controller is not proceeding with start? I guess i will need a power up sequence to know for sure right?

I dont have a pcie post card only a PCI one, also i started my other computer up with it a GA-Z77 board and it smoked out of the PCI slot with it plugged in so i think its no longer safe to use as it doesnt light up anymore.

If CPU VCore and CPU reset signal are present power sequence is finished.

Get a POST debug card that plugs into the TPM header.

Update on my Gigabyte board

So ive bought another board which is a gigabyte GA-H81M-S1 my broken board is a DS2. not many differences apart from extra LPT port at the IO.

So its a working board so Ive managed to get all the main voltage readouts for each coil. Ive tested my broken board and the voltages (when powered on, It loops remember) are more or less the same on all the main power rails.

With the CPU 12v connector removed it will power on and shut off without looping.

Ive checked the power going into the power controllers and PCH hub and they all seem to be the same.

I have also swapped the bios chips, desoldered and loaded the latest firmware onto them. but still no luck.

Tested the resistance on the coils on the cpu Vcore on the good one it climbs right up to 180k ohm and the bad one goes to about 140k but not sure exactly because it keeps climbing slowly.

I dont have an oscilloscope so i havent been able to check the Crystal for clock generation.

Im testing with a ddr3 4gb 1600 MHZ stick of ram and a pentium g3220 cpu.

Any ideas on what i should do next?

I have a Ver 3.0 board.

I bought it working but never tested it, i sold it to a kid and he said it wouldnt boot up, possible that he shorted something or run it with a bad component.

Yes im assuming that PSU is good, i have had it running on the other H81 board fine.

No post leds, and i need to get a post card with pcie connector to suit Gigabyte. lpc


Not sure what it could be, i dont have a oscilloscope so i cant check the clock generation to see if it is working, i am getting the 3.3v through there though.

So here the funny thing, I have the other board with CPU and ram out and it stays on with all the voltages coming through. When I do the same with the bad board it still cycles, every vrm gets its power for a few seconds and shuts off. Im not sure if its a problem in the boot sequence or a electrical problem in one of the last power circuits to come on.

Particularly pin34 (SLP_S3#) and pin 43 (SLP_S4#)

Are these cycling between 0V and 3.3V (or whatever voltage logic high is) at same time that Vcore is cycling on and off?

It's not particularly good news - There is kinda an 'unknown' cause of a fault that affects Asrock motherboards of a few different chipsets such as Z87 and I think H81 as well, which is why it seemed familiar and I asked the question about those two signals on the SIO chip.

Very interesting, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Its a gigabyte board but im sure they share similar components around the same generation of chipsets.
