    Beefing up the HP-550

Well I recently won the Mushkin HP-550 psu from XS a while back. its an amazing looking unit, but its built by top power and is lacking in perfomance.

It has all "asia X" brand capacitors, which I will be replacing with(thanks to arrangement with Trodas ) with

    UCC
    10v 3900uF KZE
    16v 3900uF KZE
    200v 1200uF SMQ (x2)

    1. any comments on cap selection?

i picked them due to their relatively low ESR and highest ripple current while still being decently priced.

    2. This psu also seems to lack good AC filtering, so I have added a RFI filter i got from a psu i had scrapped. but there is more i can do. i was wondering if i should add a dual choke on the input AC like i have on my antec. (what effect does it have mostly though?)

    3. What other componets can i upgrade? i have a bunch of psu's and monitors that have spare parts, i was looking at adding the missing componet that can be seen in the photo.(photo was borrowed from jonnyguru's review of the psu, link is further down.)

    4. what exactly is it and what would its effects be?

picture courtesy of jonnyguru, used only since im lacking digi cam atm

    5. does anyone know what the VR's on the railfusion pcb would be for? they dont seem to adjust voltage.

    6. the psu has no voltage feedback on any of the rails, so is there a way i can mod the psu to raise the rails?

im planning on powering 6 hdds, highly overclocked and vmodded x800pro, highly overclocked a64(vcore at 1.9v)

all fans and pumps run off 2nd psu.

i figure if my antec truecontrol 1.0 can handle it, this psu once its beefed up should be able to handle it. not to mention my antec has 3+ years under its belt at almost always 24/7 useage(fujiyhu caps still good though)

Probably supposed to sense when the LED on the back is to turn on. Rail Fusion so far seems to be nothing more than the lack of independant protection for each 12v rail.

Or do you mean variable resistors? Not sure to that one.

sorry, they are variable resistors. two small single turn pots, im unsure of the resistance.

and yes, it seems this "rail fusion" thing is all BS. there is only one 12v rail until it hits that little pcb you see mounted to the heatsink, and then it splits them there.

EDIT: where abouts in SK are you? i used to live way down south about 10 minutes from the usa border in a small small town of willowbunch, and then coronach.

The pots may adjust an over-voltage or over-current protection threshold.

Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

yeah, im starting to think they are for when railfusion kicks in. this thing will need some tweaking.
