    Xbox One No Power

    I picked up an xbox one locally without any accessories including power adapter etc.

    I picked up the xbox quite cheaply and would like to see if I can get it working.

    It didnt come with a power adapter so i ordered an xbox 360 to xbox one adapter.

    The front panel has no response so i removed the panel along with the ribbon cable, and tried to short the pins to turn it on. I get no reaction from either. I also cannot turn it on using the controller and the power supply doesnt LED does not change colour.

    I'm out of ideas at this point on what could be wrong.

      These two repairs where found with a ESR meter...> Temp at 50*F then at 90*F the ESR reading more than 10%

      1 Over Head Crane Current Sensing Board ( VFD Failure Five Years Later )
      2 Hem Saw Computer Stack Board

      All of these had CAPs POOF
      All of the mosfet that are taken out by bad caps

        After Easter, I finally had some time to look into this xbox.

        I took it apart and the pics of the board are attached. At first glance, someone has definitely been in the console before me. It is way too clean and my suspicions were confirmed when there was no thermal paste on the CPU/heat sink.

        Another thing i noticed was a scratch on the underside of the board in pic 3.

        Is there a way to check if the trace wasnt broken by the scratch?

        Other than the scratch, I don't see anything obviously wrong. Thoughts?

          Can you not place your DMM probes between solder point DB2R1 and DB2R3, set to the 200ohm setting, and see if there is continuity? (At least it looks like DB2R1 and DB2R3 are connected by that trace - part of the photo is a bit blurry to tell though)

          That scratch is really deep tho, I wonder if it has affected sub-surface traces

            I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to using the DMM.

            I tried 2 different settings. The first setting i tried setting the resistance to 200 and measured between DBR1 and DBR3. I got a reading of 97.2 ohms.

            The second thing i tried was a direct continuity test. I touched the two points (DBR1 and DBR3) and the DMM beeped, but only for a split second. Once I place the probes and leave them on the points, the DMM no longer beeps.

            Any ideas what that means?

              97.2 is a bit higher than I would think - what are the readings of just the leads touching alone? Are repeat readings consistent? These traces are sometimes designed to have a certain resistance so it may be normal (some else could chime in here) but I would expect it to be fairly close to lead resistance - might be that the trace has been affected. Again, I'm not 100% sure.

                I'll chime in here.

                Can you please re-post a picture of the trace in question? Are you talking about that apparent gauge between FT2R1 and DB2R1?

                To measure, the best way would be to follow the trace to a good solder location (e.g. on the end of a SMT resistor or cap). You would apply some firm pressure with the DMM probe tip to get through the no-clean residue.

                As far as resistance of a trace goes: What spleenharvester (nice name!) really should mean is that the impedance of a trace can be impedance controlled. That is, a net can look like 50 ohms with respect to the reference (ground) plane. A differential pair, for example, can have an impedance of 100 ohms between the + and - legs referenced to GND.

                However, if you are just measuring two points on the same trace it should read close to 0 ohm (depending on the accuracy of your meter), regardless of the trace impedance.

                For a sanity check, set the meter on ohm mode - 200 ohm or less would be good. Measure between DB2R1 and R2R1 closest to the DB2R1 test point.
