    Wow, you guys are good. The capacitors are exactly as you said.

    Fortunately I have a spare external PSU from an IOmega external drive that puts out +5V and +12V, UL approved and made by Asian Power Devices.

    I don't feel comfortable at all about using the internal PSU, not only because it's a cheap POS but also because the drive enclosure is probably acrylic, reportedly one of the most flammable plastics.

      Fortunately, mine is an aluminum unit (helps keep the drive cool).

      Do you plan to put this Iomega PSU inside the HDD enclosure?

      I have a similar example of an FSP235-60GT power supply; that being an AOpen SPI-235HP. The capacitors are the same as I said earlier (with YEC units and no "WC" brand units), but the +3.3V output capacitor is a 3300uF Fuhjyyu TMR, and the +5V output capacitor is a 1000uF 16V Fuhjyyu TNR. Again, the +12V rail capacitor is a puny 1000uF 16V unit.
      My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

        The IOmega external power pack is slightly too big to fit inside the enclosure, unless I remove it from its case, which I don't want to do because it seems to be glued shut, and it may not have any way to be mounted securely.

            That model number suggests it's actually 200W. I'd hesitate to use it for much more that 150W. Given that systems from vendors such as HP or Compaq usually don't get loaded up with extra drives and stuff (but are designed to be able to do so), that freebie system may only be drawing 120W-150W.

            With that P/S, it may not be very friendly to TVs or radios.

              I got a kick out of it too - figured it was a 200 rebadged, as most L&C's are anyway.

              This wasn't an OEM system, it was an old locally-built system that was part of a small order.
              You know there's something wrong when you open up a PSU and are glad to find Teapos.
              Why I don't buy cheap cases!

                Many would typically expect premium components in a premium brand. But this is not the case. I'm still wondering why they didn't use only Japanese electrolytics. The heatsinks were rather decent, and it appears to have active PFC.
                My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

                    Yep: big PFC inductor next to the line filter in one pic and universal I/P voltage (no voltage range switch necessary) on the label.

                      this is mine, bought for personal use, its a piece of junk. I think I damn near melted it and it shut off.

                        Machine is an Athlon 64 2.2ghz, 2gb ram, radeon x800 AGP, 1 hard drive, 2 cd rom, 1 floppy. System ran a game for about an hour, then I closed the game, fired up F@H and was browsing the internet and a screech started coming out of speakers, the picture on the monitor got all these funny lines in it. I reached back and felt the exhaust out of the power supply, HOT, the case of the ps was very very hot. It still works, just had to cool down a minute, but I have removed it from this system. Currently using a Nspire (channelwell) 350w till I order something else.

                              This PSU or the enclosure may have already claimed a victim. From FatWallet.com:

                              My Seagate 200GB has already went up in flames. I noticed an orange flickering through the side of the enclosure, and I thought to myself at first: "Hey, that's a cool looking LED". And then I smelled something funny and I powered it off but the little orange light was still on. Then I finally realized that the hard drive inside was on fire and had burned a little hole through the plastic.

                              I'm glad I substituted a UL approved IOmega PSU and mounted the drive on 1/4" thick washers for better air flow over the electronics.

                                Good pics, Zap! Bit perverted equating them to porn, though. (imho, don't kill me) The inline 6 pin connector was used on some p3 server and early P4 boards.

                                    got some FCon capacitors in local store (105°C 100uF 16V and 50V) and I'm trying to find some useful informations about them ...
                                    I'm planning to build several regulated power suplies for electronic - and I intend to use them as capacitors near regulators ...
                                    BUT as far as I understand from upper sentence - they are not much worth and it's better for me to get some better/higher regarded capacitors (such us Rubycon ZL, Panasonic FC/FM, etc) or not at all??

                                    Any help and tips very welcomed!

                                      Regarding hkivan's pictures of the Fortron 700 Epsilon:

                                      Thanks for the shots - I know there was a thread regarding this PSU on the board some time ago, and we had been unable to find meaningfully detailed pictures of it.

                                      My experience with Fortron is that in its price range, it's definitely one of the better choices one can make. I haven't seen too many failures in them, and those that I did see were usually due to some incident involving a single defective component that could often be replaced without incident. I do have two concerns, though, about the new Epsilon series:

                                      1. Although they use, admittedly, four heatsinks in place of two, they don't seem to be particularly large, especially considering the 700W rating given. Even if the PSU were to (hypothetically) have an excellent 80% efficiency at this load, those four thin aluminium slabs would have to dissipate well over 100W. The one for the diodes looks very small, as does that bearing the transistors, on the very edge of the PCB.

                                      While such a model may well be able to sustain its 700W load for the duration of a test run, it would be interesting to get some readings of the diodes' temperature, to confirm or dispel concerns about long-term reliability.

                                      2. OST RLP on the main output caps. Why didn't Fortron go with its standard Teapo in this location? Teapo sure has a better track record than OST.

                                        It depends what topology your psu`s have. if they are linear regulators i think it isn`t that mutch important to have umltimate best caps. If you plaing to build smps then i suggest some high quality , low esr caps too.
                                        In that case, reading the app notes from the smps chip manufacturer.

                                          @gonzo - I share your opinion - and yes - it goes for "classic" linear regulators ...

                                          I just wonder about such "no-name" brands - what about reliability - considering that working conditions will be "easy" ... Spmething to really worry about or not?
