    Oh, Deer!!

I have a Deer 250W ATX power supply! It's from my first PC, which was a K6-2 450 mhz processor and Soyo SY-5EMA+ motherboard (built in December, 2000), then was still used with my Athlon T-bird 900 mhz and Soyo SY-K7VTA-B motherboard (purchased in June, 2001). It was actually stabler, then my first setup, once I solved a BIOS problem. Even with that power supply, it was stable when it wasn't OC'ed.

It in fact was in repeated use until July 5, 2002. I couldn't recall it being hot either!

All of the caps appear to be fine.

    The caps:
    2

    Viva (LOL!)
    470uF

200V (the 2 monster caps) --Clean as a whistle!

    Rulycon (sorry, not Rubycon!!)
2200uF 10V--Clean as a whistle. They appear to be fine.

    Rulycon
2200uF 16V--Clean as a whistle. They appear to be fine.

    Jun Fu (only 1)

100uF 25V--Clean as a whistle. This one appears to be fine.

    Capxon

2.2uF 50V--Clean as a whistle. They appear to be fine, too!

But, what the bleep? Part of the PCB is darker!!

There appears to be a problem with at least 4 of the resistors overheating!!

I think that these PSUs might have the same problem as EuroCase - https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=831
The voltage from the aux power supply might be too high.

Hey, RJ, what camera are you using to take those pics? They are blurry as hell. And you are VERY lucky to have that Deer PSU without visibly failed caps.

webcam-type (: Ask Rainbow for tips on webcam pix cos he (?) takes pics with an ancient webcam and they are decent.

Would those be the resistors that appeared to be cooking or transistors?

Does someone have a schematic drawing for Deer PSUs?

                Re: Oh, Deer!!

Resistors near the TL494 (or DBL494 or KA7500B or some other equivalent) chip burn when voltage from the aux supply is too high. The chip is usually damaged too, sometimes also one of the main switching transistors and/or the small transistors that drive them.
Sometimes a small cap blows (the cover pops off and the guts unroll), often together with the 7805 regulator (that provides +5VSB to the board), causing damage to the board. When I see blown cap and resistors burnt beyond recognition, I don't repair it - it's good source of parts :-)

The aux power supply is different between different PSUs but the main supply is often very similar.

Edit: the PSU actually has 2 Jun Fu caps.
