    APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery

    Hi Folks

I have a APC BACKUPS-RS550. This was lying idle for over a year. Now when i checked it was not working (no power). Checked the battery and found it to be dead( zero Volts). So i replaced it with a new battery.

Now it powers on and functions properly, but the battery does not charge so the UPS works till the battery voltage falls and then dies. I need to figure out why it is not charging. I checked the onboard fuses and it seems fine. The caps also dont seem to have any issues (atleast visually). can anyone help identify why it is failing to charge.

The pic of the PCB is attached. Any adivce on how to troubleshoot the issue ?

CAUTION you have line voltage at this section of this power supply so please be careful when taking voltage measurement ( 120 volts DC or higher )

    With out the battery installed

First check the fuse just before the capacitors and ( IC7 )
Also check to see if you have any voltage on those two capacitor if you have voltage on the capacitors
    ( then go to —> )

    Second

Do you have voltage on ( C43 )

If you do not have any voltage on ( C43 )
Then replace the IC chip with the part number TYN274PN ( IC7 )

    Then go from there

I do not see the start capacitor for this switching power regulator or then again some of them do not have one it does have one it is ( C45 )

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery

      HI Sam

      Thanks for the guidance.

All tests were conducted with the battery disconnected

I checked the fuse F3 and that is fine, its not open
There is voltage at the two capacitors (c50 and C51) about 165V each

At C43 the behavior is very weird. when i disconnect the battery and check i see about 11.45V (which is same as the current battery voltage). So i short the terminals of the capcitor so that the capacitor discharges. Now when i check the voltage is near zero but very very gradually increasing at the rate of 5mV per second. Switching on or off the 230V mains has no impact on this behaviour. I cant understand how the voltage is increasing if the mains are off. After crossing 0.5V the rate at which voltage across the capacitor increases slows down further.

So does this mean the IC is IC chip with the part number TYN274PN is bad ?? Any way to cross verify this ?

      Thanks once again

Probably I would just go ahead replace it

It switching power regulator does not seem to be switching at all

Here is the data sheet for this ic chip

Ok will replace this and get back. What should the ideal voltage be at C43?

BUt i still dont get it, the UPS works fine, and will move to battery power when the mains go off and go back to main power when the mains come back. The only problem is once the mains come back the battery does not charge. Is the above component part of the charging circuit ?

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery

Need more help. Now i got a same model UPS to repair again, but this time found both the Fuse F1 blown and the chip TYN274PN ( IC7 ) physically damaged (blown). Considering the UPS was used for PC in a factory of sorts, assumed a power surge or voltage fluctuation had taken both out. So i replaced both the fuse and the chip. Now i am back to the similar problem you helped fix last time. Works perfectly on AC current but does not charge the battery.

The fuse and IC7 are new (just replaced)
Voltage on each capacitor is about 165V
Voltage at C43 is about 1V
I also checked the voltage across capacitor - C48 (left hand side top of IC7), which is supposed to show the reference voltage of IC7 and that is showing 5.85V correctly.

The images post replacement of fuse and IC7 are attached. Any help point me in the right direction would help.

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery

Dose this battery backup have a separate transformer in the case

If you have track where the battery is suppose to get the power to charge the battery

Will the unit work if you have it plugged in and remove the plug does what you have plug in the battery backup stay working you do have to have charged up batteries to do this test

This is important that it will work in the backup mode because if not it might not be worth repairing it

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery

Yes the UPS has a separate transformer in the case. The transformer input is J3 and J4. The output goes to J2. When the UPS is on backup (battery) power, the transformer kicks in and voltage at J3 j4 is about 8V as battery is weak (about 10V) and the voltage at J5 is 210V.

When on main power all the voltages at the transformer at zero.

The UPS works fine and switches to battery power when mains power is switched off and switches back to main power when main power returns.

I wonder if opto U1 is damaged when the TNY blew up.

That is strange that your RS-550 does not have LCD diSplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGR-JkgiN3I.

From my research, the RS-550 uses PCB 640-1172A REV 05.

But put that aside, I cannot find the schematic of the PCB 640-1115A_REV 06 used in the UPS that you have.
I still suspect that opto-isolator is damaged when that TNY blew up.

Re: APC BACKUPS-RS550 not charging battery

Same problem here searching for the schematic. I came across the Russian page when i was searching for the schematic. The only difference between the board mentioned on that page and my board is the REV number. Mine is REV 06, on the page it is REV 07

Thanks. i will try replacing the Opto-Isolator. But I cant seem to the find the exact replacement part (A817V). Search for this leads to an equivalent HCPL-817.

But there are so many variants of it, i dont know which one to pick. They differ primarily on the CTR value ranging between 50% to 300%. Not sure which one is compatible to the one on the board

Look at page 3 of spec sheet, the rank code marking is on the bottom right of the body.
You have A817V so body code is HCPL-817-06xE
If the rank code is '0' then the CTR is 50 ~ 600%. = HCPL-817-060E
                                      If is marked an rank A = HCPL-817-06AE for CTR of 80 ~ 160%.
BTW, did you remove the opto and then check resistance of the Photo transistor side and the Emitter side?

I am finally giving up on this repair. The Opto was a surface mounted device. Its placed right next to the transformer which has a lot of plastic on it. In my speed to remove the Opto from the board before causing damage to the transformer from the hot air gun, I succeeded in ripping up the pads and track from the PCB for one of the legs. There does not seem to be a way to salvage the situation. :-)
