    nope tried again, still no dice.

    Its a bad idea to put in a smaller cap right?

    could someone else with a i7 920 please try testing their caps for me?

      That's hard to say without knowing what it's connected to.
      If it's in a bank of parallel caps you might not need it at all.

      I use skt 771 Xeons or C2D and that's actually more than I need for anything.

      Were I you I'd look for one advertised as bad on ebay and see if you can get it cheap to cannibalize for the SMD parts.

            bingo!most of these caps are on vcore.
            some may be pullup/pulldown resistors.
            if damaged this may cause misreporting of type mentioned earlier.

              good point, but I was using the electrodes from point to point of the cap, would like to avoid de soldering good ones but any way of telling if I am?

                  14uF is possible in smaller SMD ceramic, but I kind of doubt it.

                    The closest I found was too big and about $14 each.

                    At that price by the time you bought enough to fix that thing might as well have bought a new CPU.
