    Component Identification? What are these?

I pulled these from somewhere a long time ago and never took a look at what they were. It's too bad that I didn't study the board they came out of, but the board's long gone... anyway, now I wonder if anyone knows what these are...

When I put an ohmmeter across them they're open both ways. I suspect they're kind of broken but maybe they're nonlinear...

could be zenner diodes,at a guess

That would be my guess as well. I'm just not used to seeing color-bands on through-hole ones.

And good luck figuring out value, AFAIK, manufacturer's didn't really have a standard -- the colors don't translate directly to a voltage value, but to a part number on a look-up sheet -- which is why in most cases color-coded diodes have been replaced with ones with part numbers on them.

Through-hole as opposed to surface-mount (SMT).

Re: Component Identification? What are these?

They really do not look like diodes through the glass, but then again who knows... usually there's a visible whisker or orange like the one Blargh posted.

The fact that they're open both ways is bothersome, unless all four of them were fried at the same time... Very weird. A zener diode works like a regular diode when forward biased.

The internal construction of these things look like resistors more than semiconductors which bothers me... but then again they may be fried...

Re: Component Identification? What are these?

I have seen those before on CRT monitors/tvs on the small driver board that physically connects to the tube pins. Also I have seen similar looking devices on the mains input on some circuit boards. I have no clue what they are either... the only hint is the board is marked "SGXXX" wherein the x's are like any other component numbers.

Re: Component Identification? What are these?

I believe these may be transient voltage suppressors, known as TVS diodes. These parts will test open until the rated voltage is exceeded. They come in either mono-directional or bi-directional types. The new ones I have are all in the standard black diode package however.
                  Is it plugged in?

                    SG is spark gap.

                        Yeah, the definitely are.

I have some too. They work like neon lamps, they glow orange at about 80v. They look like the OP's too.

                          Hello guys,
I have a problem with my laptop as in the title, black screen, capslock displays error code 5 long 3 short, no voltage on the coils above the CPU, before removing the drive I had 0.8v there, power led flashed 5x long and the battery would not charge (current jumped from 0.5a to 2.8a), now on the power led I have a steady white light or orange when the battery is connected.
                          What I did:
                          - Laptop was not detecting ram, loose pins on ram slot, error 3.2 disappeared, ram working tested in another laptop

As far as I know the laptop was in another service center...

                          Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my Acer predator XB241YU screen. When I plug it in, the startup LED turns on instantly, and I can't turn off the screen without unplugging it.
After disassembly and inspection of the electronic cards I found what looks like a broken inductor, it is marked with the letter A and is at location L58.
In the first photo you can see the broken component, in the second photo you can see where it is on the board, in the third photo you can see the silkscreen and in the fourth photo you can see the identification sticker of the main board
                          I...

Identification of Component T5 on NEXIQ USB-Link 2 (damaged due to crushing)
                          by Tomylee
                          Hi everyone,
I'm currently repairing a NEXIQ USB-Link 2 that was physically damaged due to crushing. After a thorough inspection, it appears that only one component is visibly damaged: the T5 component, located right next to the Mini-USB port.

It's a 4-pin SMD component, with one pin at each corner, aligned front-to-back along the USB port axis. Unfortunately, it is broken, and there are no visible markings left on the part to identify it.

I'm looking for help with the following:

The exact identification or part number of the T5 component
                          ...
