Default Deep Well Pump Control Box - Start & Run Capacitors & Relay - CB20412CR

Trying to help a small hospital in Haiti...

Is it possible to test the relay without it being hooked up to the pump motor? It is the normal 5-1-2 configuration, as far as I understand it.

Any tips for testing large start/run capacitors of this size and nature?

This is very similar to a Freon compressor start relay one general rule is if the start capacitor is open or exposed then more than likely it is bad and should be replaced the run capacitor needs to be checked also to make sure that the UF value is correct and not low in value

If everything is good and the motor still not start and runs then either the motor is faulty or the start relay is faulty and should be replaced

Also need to check with a amp clamp on meter that your starting current is only momentary and that your running current does not exceed the current rating on the data plate

These two repairs where found with a ESR meter...> Temp at 50*F then at 90*F the ESR reading more than 10%

All of these had CAPs POOF

agreed should be able to test each component individually. The start/run caps have to have their rated capacitance and their DC leakage value needs to be low, usually an ohmmeter is sufficient for the latter.

I've heard a lot of techs in the past just use leakage as the sole metric for testing motor capacitors (and the pulse behavior of capacitors at DC). Not sure how accurate this is, but these are metrics that must be sufficient for a working capacitor, and hence motor.

I would check these devices and make sure that they have a good connection and that they work properly you do have to stall the motor to check the over current one the starter one should not stay on for more than a few seconds at the most
