I really hope someone will be able to help me?
I have recently moved house and dismantled a working 5.1 home cinema
system. Unfortunately when putting it back together again I get no
sound out of the sub, I'll try and give you as much (probably too much)
information to hopefully allow you to sort my problem, or at least
point me in the right direction.
* My system consists of a Yamaha DSP-AX861SE AV receiver connected to
various sources and outputting through speaker cables to 4 x Monitor
Audio Radius 90s, 1 Radius 225 and a via the dedicated sub pre out
via a high quality RCA cable to the Right line level input of a RS
W12 sub
* When using auto set up with the dedicated microphone connected to
the receiver for the new room the wiring to the sub was not detected
with the receiver indicating a 3/2/--- system
* So my first problem was trying to sort out if it was the receiver,
the cable or the sub
* I switched in two different cables with the same result so was
fairly confident that it wasn't the cable
* After much searching on the internet I found a quick test to see if
a sub is working, with all power off remove the sub cable from the
receiver, then power up the sub and tap a finger on the centre post
of the cable and an audible "thump" should be heard. I got two
"thumps" but after this no more and it has not done this again
despite numerous attempts
* Next I disconnected the sub and using an RCA to phono cable adaptor
I connected the receiver sub pre out to a powered stand alone ipod
speaker.
* When sending a test tone from the receiver to selected speakers I
was able to hear an output from the stand alone speaker when the sub
test signal was selected
* When I ran the auto set up it detected the wiring
* Next I reconnected the sub as before and this time used the Left and
Right line level outputs on the sub to connect to the stand alone
speaker. Again a test tone could be heard from the stand alone
speaker but not from the sub itself
* When I ran the auto set up the wiring was detected, and the test
tone could be heard from the stand alone speaker, but not the
sub, and the receiver indicated a 3/2/0.1 system
Therefore from the above I concluded that:-
* The receiver output an LFE signal from it's dedicated pre out
* This was successfully carried by the cable
* It reached the sub
* The sub was not able to output a sound itself
* The sub was able to pass on the LFE input to another speaker
Thanks in advance
Nick
