Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
Great work, it will not have the same power output but I am sure it will be good enough.
So how much is the transformer? And now you learn how we go about to narrow down and find out that it is the transformer that caused the the main fuse to blow not due to MOSFETs or the bridge.Last edited by budm; 11-24-2015, 04:54 PM.Never stop learning

Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
I think it's powerful enough as when you crank it full it starts to struggle as to say turn me down a little.
Definitely and it makes sense to break things down instead of jumping randomly into the deep end. Break things down into sections and follow a set course where you can starting from the power in then through different sections of the board.
I went straight away to mosfets which was as it turns out to be a waste of time. To be honest I didn't really know what a transformer did nor had I encountered a faulty one before but it is a lesson learned.
Transformer was about £19

You should build a fixture to put the lamp in series with what you are testing, the lamp will light up brightly if there is shorted circuit, it saves me lots of good fuse and power devices.

Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
I'll look into it.
Just a quick query so I understand the shorted toroid.
Transformer is copper wire wrapped around a donut shaped thing. Wires are kept spaced for 1 full wrap. Before second wire wrap a plastic layer is wrapped around insulating the first layer coil. Then 2nd wire wrap and so on.
So for a short to appear, one of them internal insulating wraps may have melted allowing 2 layers of coils to make contact?Last edited by mikay786; 11-24-2015, 05:32 PM.

Re: Can you test a silicone rectifier with a MM?
TOROID transformer is just another form factor of transformer. It is transformer.
It can be step-up, step-down or 1:1, etc.

You need rectifier o converter AC to DC.Last edited by budm; 11-24-2015, 06:13 PM.Never stop learning
