Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

In my limited experience, I've found that it can be tricky to get the pad dimensions and placement correct. I bought 1mm thick silicone heat transfer pad, so that I could experiment with different thicknesses. Actually, that's a bit of a pain, as the 1mm thick stuff is very fiddly, so you might be better off with thicker.

Everyone's issue is going to be different. The following is what I found I needed to do for my issue:

Initially, I covered the full width of the problem tab, covering in particular where the ribbon connects to the panel, i.e. relatively high up. However, after a couple of days, the lines started reappearing.

I experimented with pressure from my finger, and found that I needed to press on the right-hand side of the tab, not the middle or the left. Because the closest screw for the metal bezel was to the left of the tab, having the strip of silicone across the whole width of the tab was actually working against me. The metal bezel was pivoting on the left-hand edge of the strip, so was pushed down more on the left than the right, which isn't where I wanted the pressure to be. If your screws are in different locations to the problem tabs, this will of course vary.

I also found that I need to press a little below the connection, i.e. where the ribbon cable is mostly in thin air.

I modified my silicone to only be on the right hand side of the tab to target the pressure, and moved it down so that it was also against the ribbon, although not quite wrapping around as others have done. This seemed to work OK for me, although it's only been a week so far.

Regarding my own query from https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...&postcount=138 I decided against also using Kapton tape to keep the silicone in place. However, for me, the tabs never got hot. On a older model LCD I worked on previously, the tabs did get hot, so this is obviously not universal. But if your tabs don't get hot, then the action of the silicone is less heat transfer rather just putting pressure on the tab, in which case you might get away with using other materials.

I attach pictures of the problem as seen from a distance, and from close (with a ruler, as I was concerned the problem might "spread" further left so wanted to keep a record of it), and how it appears when I press the tab to make the problem go away. I also attach pics of my initial attempt to fix with full-width silicone, and my latest attempt with a smaller, more targetted, application.

I'll keep this thread informed on how well this lasts.

Is there a chance to get this thread stickied, and maybe renamed to "DIY tab bonding repair" or similar, as this seems to be the best place to discuss this?

Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

Can someone please explain/define what "tab bond failure" actually means.

Does it mean that the ribbons/tapes that are connected to the panel is (for whatever reason) came lose and don't stick anymore...eg. not making contact?

How is the contact made anyway? Glue? Solder?

I am asking because I see people doing the fix by applying physical pressure with pads...but if we know how the contact is made in the first place, and why it came lose, maybe it can be re-attached and permanently fixed with a heatgun? (I obviously didn't read this entire thread).

As I understand it, to properly repair this is out of the reach of home DIYers and most repair shops, and needs very specialist equipment.

Price depends on a machine type. We use a machine for cell phone LCDs and it cost about USD 3000. But it is one of the most cheap machine we found. It is a pulse heating machine that is better and also more expensive than constant heating machine.
But when checking the design I would guess a similar machine can be made as DIY machine at about 2000 USD or less ( depending on your country)

Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

                  Hello.
I am new to this forum.

I have tried this fix on my Samsung UA46C7000 , BUT it does not solve the issue.

My panel is a LTF460HQ02 from 2010. It does NOT have tabs on the sides, but all 12 tabs are located at the bottom of the screen. I did not see any picture improvement when touching the tabs, but I did the fix to cool down the chips.

Originally, the double image issue happened randomly, with the wrongly positioned lines jumping up and down , but since I tweaked the TV, the symptom now happens always at cold start, and disappears after a few minutes.

I have seen that the menu was OK at cold start without any video signal, and when applying HDMI video, the symptom appeared, while the menu was still clear.

I have attached zipped pictures to this post

Do you have any advice on the possible root cause ?
                  Thanks
                  Chris

Sory for my english hope to understand what i mean.

                      Hey All -

Just wanted to say thank you to all of you who give advice. I recently picked up a 52" Samsung (LN52A550P3F) from the recycling center that exhibited some of these issues. I followed the advice on this forum, and wouldn't you know it, the tab bond repair worked!

I'm not a technician or expert, so wanted to pass on all the credit where it was due. If you want to watch a noob take apart a TV and fix it, I uploaded the video to YouTube: https://youtu.be/8l5ORKjQF5U

I purchased the thermal pad from Amazon for about 10 dollars (it was on sale at the time...now it's $15). It seemed to match or exceed the specs I found in this forum. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UYTTLI4...ing=UTF8&psc=1

That is NOT an affiliate link because I'm just trying to offer something back to the community for helping me. But, if you ARE looking to buy them, and don't mind helping me out, there IS an affiliate link on the YouTube description...thanks in advance if anyone goes that route.

Thanks again for all the input and guidance provided in this forum. It helped me out and now my kids have a pretty sweet TV in the basement! Thanks again!

                      Jeremy

                        Hey Jeremy ~

Great video and link for the pads. Thank you for taking the time to post both. I am on the verge of fixing a 46” Samsung in the same manner.

Just curious if your 52” Samsung tv is still running as flawlessly as it was at the end of the video. Looks like it's about 4 months now since you posted back in September.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Been some time since the last active post on this forum. Been reading through the posts and have some questions. I have a samsung LN52A650 mfg in 2008 with a lot of video symptoms similar or identical to the ones described here.
1 Why is a thermal pad recommended? It seems that the fix puts pressure on the flexible circuit strip so what gets hot?
2 There is no way to do this fix in a shop in a more permanent fashion? I am an experienced EE and wonder why some sort of soldering technique cant be used? Too fine pitch? Is the bonding done with something other than solder?
3 Thermal pads - what characteristic is the main thing to look for -thickness? or high heat transfer coefficient?
4 is there a solution procedure 'pinned' anywhere on this forum to reference? (wading through 9 pages of postings to get an idea of the problem & solution took a while)
                            Thanks
                            J

4 - No, it's a very simple principle, applying some pressure.

Thanks. I've seen that video before. Useless. no description of the stuff he is using, and it just ends in the middle of his repair.

I took my LN52A650 apart today only to discover that it is quite a job to tear it down to where the TABs are. There seem to be a metal frame surround the display and attached to the frame are all the electronic components, so not sure how to access where the tabs are. More fun for another day.

Right, apply pressure, any fairly ridged material that can withstand a little heat should work. A little challenging to manhandle a 52" frame to get to the heart of the matter.

I repaired an old Sony a long time ago that had bad tab bonds, and I think that's the issue with this Samsung I'm about to get. I've attached photos, so let me know if it looks like bad tab bonds.
