Is This an Isolation Transformer ?

Patronics CA1000JH. Two outlets, a switch, a fuse and a large transformer. That's it. Bought it for $8 at a resale shop.

No, the bad part is that, they put the AC power input fuse on the Neutral (White wire) instead of the Hot wire. You should verify that Hot and Neutral wires are properly wired up.

How do I verify that ? I plugged a lamp into it at the store and the lamp came on.

If it's not an Isolation Transformer then what is it ?

its a buck/boost transformer. 220v for australian junk and 100v for old radios.
(thats what i use mine for at least)

It is an multi-tap autotransformer. You can use you AC voltmeter and the measure the AC voltage between the Neutral and Ground, Hot and Ground to see what you get. In US, the Neutral is tied to ground at the circuit breaker panel, so Neutral to Ground should show 0V (it may show perfect 0V if there is load in the same circuit using that same Neutral wire.

Re: Is This an Isolation Transformer ?

Yep autotransformer. There is no isolation - you can see that one wire of the input (120V) is connected to both outputs - that's not isolation.

It's how to get 220V for European devices in the USA. I was wondering about Patronics, is that a Canadian company? They don't seem to be well listed on Google.

I have only a Sabir 250VA autotransformer to get 220V from 120V or 120V from 220V. This one is also an autotransformer (no isolation) and was made in France as far as I can tell... Unfortunately it definitely was made in the EU as the input plug is a dual pin and thus can't really use it without an adaptor or modification...

not only australian there is another moderately large continent across the pond that is using 220v
