the question is how that ribbon maps to the pinstrip on the backing pcb.
your spot on with your link ive just moved my ribbon cable carefully and it looks identical pin wise on the ribbon cable tracks

Tried "testing-swap12.zip" but just like the others there was only backlight.

shit.
have to think about this until vince pins out that display to the pinstrip on the backing board.
and the socketstrip on the mainboard to the cpu for that matter - his underside photo was not good enough to get that part.

what i have is this:
1 - gnd
2 - atmel pin 2?
3 - atmel pin ?
4 - atmel pin ?
5 - atmel pin 5?
6 - +5v
7 - gnd
8 - +v (led)
9 - gnd (led)

pin1 on the socketstrip is at the outer edge - can you trace/meter the atmel pins to the display connector?
i suspect the atmel is using pins 2,3,4 & 5

I already did, back in this post I tracked the Atmel CPU to the pinstrip.
And it was exactly as the schematic I linked on the previous page.

o.k., i need the track marked in green clarified.
where is it going on the pinstrip?
there is too much flux to see it clearly.

and i need the cpu pins traced - dont point me at a bogus schematic from china.

You are correct they mislabeled some of the pins, but the layout seems correct.
As now verified by vinceroger69 as well

I now tried all firmwares in "testing-chips.zip"
The only one which gave scrolling text like with the previous files quoted below was the 7565 display firmware.
All others just had blank display with backlight lit.

The above two behaved like it also did with "GM328A ESR tester (SVN663).zip" which was scrolling characters on the screen.
