Pass through Internet from Ubuntu 15.04 to Windows 2000

Hi, y'all! I have 2 computers:
1 custom built workstation running Ubuntu 15.04
1 Dell Dimension 2400 running Windows 2000.

I am trying to do an Internet passthrough from computer A(the workstation) to computer B(the Dell). I do not have an Ethernet cable long enough to reach the Dell. I cannot install wireless drivers, as the OS is too old for the drivers. NO I WILL NOT UPGRADE THE OS!!! How do I rig up an Internet passthrough to computer B? Thanks in advance!

You'll need 2 ethernet cards and set up IP masquerading on the Linux box. To do so you'll need to research how to for that particular distro. Be aware that your Linux box is going to be acting in the role of a router for the W2K box which is going to use CPU time, RAM and network bandwidth on the Linux box which will slow its performance.

You didn't say the Ubuntu PC was wireless in your OP, hence the suggestion of two NICs
The advice given in the other forum is not advanced, and instead of saying "it failed badly" perhaps give some detail. Or get a long cable if you want simple. Or Windows 7, it's only a few clicks to do what you want. Or find a wireless device that supports Windows 2000.

p.s. caps and bold do not impress.
p.p.s your sig is wrong. g wireless is plenty fast enough, it's the cpu (133mhz) and ram (16mb) letting you down rendering modern web pages.

That is the way IP masquerading works, you need two active network network devices in the box sharing its connection, one for the internet and one for the other computer. The IP masquerading routes packets between the internet connection and the second connection intended for the 2nd computer. If you don't have another network device in the Linux box how do you propose to network the other computer to it? I'm not sure but I don't think that W2K supports IEEE 1394 or USB networking.

To use your wireless network you need a working wireless card in the W2K box. That would make using IPMasq (aka ICS in the Windows world) completely unnecessary.

Your cheapest and easiest solution is a long enough cat5 cable to reach the router from the W2K box.

How is your Linux box (host) connecting to the network?

Does your host box have a wired-network card that you aren't using? Does the W2K box have a wired-network card? If so then a cat5 cable between them should work to use IPMasq.

IPMasq = IP Masquerading = ICS (Internet Connection Sharing in Windows world). Look it up to know more.

I think you should be able to bridge the connection between the wireless and wired although the wireless device needs to be able to support promiscuous mode.

I think you should look it up for yourself and not expect others to do it for you. If you run into specific problems you need help with then ask about them but it's really not polite to ask others to be your google monkeys. Look it up, read and learn about it. If you come across something you don't understand then look that up too. If you get stuck and can't progress then ask for help. In other words at least show some effort. It is not the most difficult thing to do but it's not some simple plug and play thing either.
