    Motherboard diagnostic LED states

I've identified no more than 16 possible states for indication of motherboard diagnostic states which can be indicated with only 4 single colour LEDs which is:
    • No power applied (all off)
    • Power applied - no standby to RAM (one is on)
    • Standby to RAM

In sequence after power on not waking from standby to RAM:
    • Power supply rail(s) missing or out of tolerance (includes CPU +12V)
    • Power supply protection shutdown (trap - also display before boot)
    • Onboard DC-DC converter failure (includes CPU DC-DC converter)
    • CPU failure
    • BIOS checksum failure
    • Platform Controller Hub (PCH) failure
    • Memory failure
    • Video system failure
    • CPU fan failure
    • CPU over temperature shutdown (trap - also display before boot)
    • Invalid configuration/CMOS RAM battery failure/overclocking failure
    • Boot failure
    • Boot OK (all illuminated)

For the CPU/PCH/video, a single failure code is indicated if any part of it fails e.g. for the PCH, the IRQ controller, timer etc.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

    i must have missed something,
    what motherboard(s) and what leds.

the only boards i'v seen with leds are some old dual cpu servers with a row of leds,
and a couple of athlon gaming boards that had a 2digit display.

      Re: Motherboard diagnostic LED states

I used to have an old P4 board (MSI branded ATX, desktop board) that had 4 diagnostic LEDs on the back panel that counted from 0 (all off) to 15 (all on) as it went through POST, each meaning something different as it progressed...

Alas it was a P4 so that's why it's gone...

That would be MSI's D-Bracket you're talking about. I have mine installed on a Athlon XP 2500+ nF2 build, which features an MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR mobo.
        Main rig:
        Gigabyte B75M-D3H
        Core i5-3470 3.60GHz
        Gigabyte Geforce GTX650 1GB GDDR5
        16GB DDR3-1600
        Samsung SH-224AB DVD-RW
        FSP Bluestorm II 500W (recapped)
        120GB ADATA + 2x Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST31000340NS 1TB
        Delux MG760 case
