LED Flashlight cree xm-l t6 COB Review of power supply

I bought a couple of flashlights from AliExpress for half way decent price

But here are some down falls of the product

The switching power supply is basically a joke

It has a optic sensor feedback but the charging voltage is controlled by a zener diode

The car charger is more of a joke it only has drop down resistor

Now as far as the battery concern the label says 2200 milliamperes not quite it only 1500 useable and tested at 1660 milliamperes

Now I like this flashlight and here why

The outermost LED Cob light is about 180 milliamperes
The center LED Light is about 300 milliamperes on high
The center LED light is about 180 milliamperes on low
The center LED light is about 300 milliamperes in flashing mode

So if you use a 3200 milliamperes battery your run time will be quite long

    now here's the catch.
the charge-port goes directly to the battery contacts,
and the only thing in the car charger is a fucking resistor!!!
(well 2 if you include the one for the led)
btw, *never* buy these with the battery - it's a slavage job with no protection circuit - even if the label says otherwise.

have a zener diode decide if my lithium is charged - hell no!
btw, they cost a couple of $ - not 10!!
Now if the battery has decent battery protection board the charger that comes with it— it might work alright but I would only do that if I know what company made the battery and the protection board

I know you have commented on this flashlight before in another post but I had to take it apart and see this for myself

But I knew what I was buying before I bought it

Now I have a fix for the down falls of this product

I going to use a small battery power pack and hack it for the charging controller gut the battery or batteries and use the power cord from the very cheap power supply

Use a Panasonic battery with a protection board build in the battery

and really have a good setup

take the sleeve off the battery - i bet it's not protected even if the label says it is!!

btw, how did you meter the current? your numbers look wrong.

about 90% of the *.fire stuff has no protection even if stated that it does.
a zener to set charging voltage is silly.
sounds like this thing isnt worth the tinfoil its made of.
if the designer/manufacturer didnt have even a tp4056 board in the budget this thing is solidly in the pure trash category.
a resistor to charge a probably *.fire grade battery?
a splash of gasoline and a match is a much more predictable way of starting a fire!
        let me guess.
        an xml-t6 claiming 6000 lumens?

With the end cap off and one meter lead on the battery and the other meter lead on the case of the flashlight

Btw I have a small flashlight that is bright as sh*t and on high it milliamperes is about 4000 and on low it about 2000 but what I do not like about it is two things ( I have used the same exact meter for both flashlight )

When working on something with this flashlight the light is so bright that it wash’s out what you are looking at ( on high ) and on low a lot of time it is not bright enough

Batteries in this flashlight runs about a hour on high with ni cad batteries and about 1.5 hours on low

I wish I could find a flashlight like this but it would use a 18650 battery and the brightness could be controlled but this combination might be asking for to much

you can tell when the batteries are getting low it starts flickering and then shortly after that the light goes dim

            Most of the time

I do pay very much about what a company claim about brightness and about battery running time because

Most of the time they full of crap

The brightness of this flashlight is decent but the only complaint I have is the focus is a little bit crap-ee in that it is square all the way in and way out it is mostly a circle

But the flashlight itself is worth $7.50 for what I paid for

Now the charger that runs 110 ac voltage is worth maybe a $1.00 that's for the charging power cord for it plug to charge the battery

Now the 12 volt car charger is only good for the cord same as above

The battery worth I have not determined as of yet
Because I have not tested it completely

But I am going to remove the heat shrink tubing that on the battery then I will know more

meter inline wont work, they read like shit at high current & low voltage.

you need to use a short loop of heavy wire and put a clamp-meter through it.
              watch.

He very correct about what he has there I have a meter that can do the same thing but it is at work I will have to bring it home and test it that way I will post the results

I have watched him a few times before and I have gotten a lot of good information from his videos

                  Stj

Have you taken this flashlight apart and if you have can you enlighten on how to do this

I would like to see how the LEDS are being controlled

One note I do not want to destroy the flashlight in order to do this

                  Thanks

First of all it does not say that it has a protection board

This is a no brand name battery it has a green heat sink tubing and the outer shell of the battery once you remove the heat shrink tubing on either one there is no printing

                      post a pic.
sounds like a generic $3 zoomie.
rebadged by scheisters as the g700 x800 atomic beam ect.
its got a really cheap asic in there and resistor to limit current.
the can the led mcpcb sits in is hollow and these 2 design choices severely limit how hard you can push it.
and it likely has a cheap cree knockoff led from latticebright.
                      usually very blue or purplish.

Does anyone know where I can buy a high powered flashlight that uses a 18650 battery and has different power levels of brightness no strobing would be preferred

I would prefer one that you charge the battery with out taking out of the flashlight

And one that I do not have to pay an arm and a leg to buy it

My budget for one is about $50.00

IIRC, purplish and/or a washed out combo were common, especially a cheap LED flashlight that believe it or not, existed in, if not a bit before the Bush Jr. era, made in 2003 or sometime before 2003! It didn't last long, it suddenly stopped working and fresh batteries didn't fix it (AA, IIRC) (maybe AAA) It was back in the earlier-CFL-era, so it was a shocker to have an LED flashlight!

And purplish ones for car interior LEDs, were apparently the usual for the early-2010s. (I saw a 2011 Avenger with those)

I also saw purplish (a.k.a. lilac-colored) ones on those stick-up LED lights, that someone got in 2008, IIRC. Early LEDs, often look like a grayish-bluish-purple.

the purple is caused by using a blue led to excite the phosphor coating instead of a UV one.
the blue had a longer lifespan.

Have you taken this flashlight apart and if you have can you enlighten on how to do this

I would like to see how the LEDS are being controlled

One note I do not want to destroy the flashlight in order to do this

                                  Thanks
it's the one light i have not stripped.
i stripped the one with teeth, and it was well built but complex.
i was afraid to damage this one or not be able to re-assemble it.

what i can say, upto the head is going to be the same.
so you have the switch/socket assembly inserted from the base and held in with an expanding circlip.
it has a metal cup on top.

reason, the led capsule is designed to work with tailcap-switch designs and has a spring on it that would normally press against the battery.

control is going to be done with either a microcontroller + 2 fets, or a custom controller with internal fets.
current limiting is going to involve resistors.
                                  -probably-

how's your knowlege of working with microcontrollers?

That reminds me of 21 years ago, IIRC, when the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center (Greenfield, New Hampshire) gym, got frosted mercury vapor lights, even when the ones that got expelled weren't an obsolete type, AFAIK!

The previous, which had bad bulbs or ballasts, was HPS.

Apparently, the white-frosted red-phosphor mercury vapors were the rage.

Those, instead or blue (and green) at startup, look reddish-purple, before going to a white, most likely in the ball park of 5,000K to 6,500K.

not seen it, but the old "SOX" low pressure sodiums started like that, before the outer gas fired up and it went bright orange.

For the HPS ones in the gym, bulb-wise, it was a franken-mix, while it didn't seem unusual for them to start off as white, before going to pink, there were ones that were more of an orange and start up looked more like a dimmed incandescent.

I suspect there were HPS bulbs of different manufacturers. I think I did see different manufacturers, when taken down, if I didn't for some of them, before the day of them getting taken down, which was one day in 1997, IIRC.
